Honors Geometry Companion Book, Volume 2

Key Objectives • Draw representations of three-dimensional figures. • Recognize a three-dimensional figure from a given representation. Key Terms • An orthographic drawing shows six different views of an object: top, bottom, front, back, left side, and right side. • Isometric drawing is a way to show three sides of a figure from a corner view. • In a perspective drawing , nonvertical, parallel lines are drawn so that they meet at a point called a vanishing point . • Vanishing points are located on a horizontal line called the horizon . Example 1 Drawing Orthographic Views of an Object 10.1.2 Representations of Three-Dimensional Figures An orthographic drawing of a three-dimensional

object is demonstrated in this example. An orthographic drawing shows the two-

dimensional representation of an object from six viewing locations. To make the drawing, imagine the view of the object from a particular location. Be careful to represent the sides of the object in the correct orientation.

Example 2 Drawing an Isometric View of an Object

An isometric drawing of a three-dimensional object is demonstrated in this example. An isometric drawing shows an object from one corner, oriented such that three sides are visible. All lines that are parallel in the object are also parallel in the drawing, unlike in perspective drawing. An isometric drawing can be made most easily using isometric dot paper as a guide.
