10.2.1 Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders (continued) Example 5 Problem-Solving Application

The surface areas of two solid figures are determined to answer a question about the physical behavior of the two objects in this application example. The base length and width and height of a rectangular prism are given. The diameter and height of a half cylinder are given. The surface area of the rectangular prism is obtained by substituting the given values into the formula for surface area. The area is 62 cm 2 . The surface area for the half cylinder is obtained by substituting half the diameter into a formula for the area of a right cylinder that only counts one base and half the lateral area. The area is approximately 104.25 cm 2 . The half cylinder area is far greater than the rectangular prism area, so this block of ice will melt much faster.
