NFU plans National Day of Action against GM-Alfalfa

United Church of Canada, among over 100 others. Some say a concern with GM organisms is the creation of terminator seeds, which do not allow proper reproduction. Terminator seed pollen loose in the environment could sicken existing planted and naturalized alfalfa crops, potentially leading to a crash of that crop. Alfalfa is important as hay, dairy cow and other livestock feed, ground cover, green manure, and honey production.

Alfalfa is an important constituent of hay, feed and green manure. The federal gov- ernment is close to allowing genetically modified alfalfa to be sold by Monsanto in Canada. Unlike other GM crops such corn, soy and canola, alfalfa is a perennial which is open pollinated and widespread throughout North America. Critics say introduc- ing a GM variety will contaminate non-GM crops and could negatively affect all al- falfa. A Day of Action to protest its approval is planned for April 9 in Hawkesbury and Ottawa.

Recently the Canadian flax market was decimated by GM genes, which are not accepted in many markets, including the European Union.

The NFU and many other producer organizations are opposed to GM alfalfa on the basis that cross-pollination with existing alfalfa, which is an open-pollinated perennial, could contaminate alfalfa across the country.
