A M I A SOLDIER OF THE CROSS? Words by Isaac Watts Music by Thomas A. Arne It was the custom of Watts to com pose a sacred hymn-poem each week, to use in connection with the Sunday morning sermon. He was to preach one Sunday morn ing during the winter of 1727 on the subject, “Holy Fortitudes, or, Reme dies Against Fears,” using the text in I Cortinthians 16:13, “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” (This text also played an important part in the writ ing of another well-known gospel song,— “ Stand Up For Jesus.” ) For this particular sermon, Watts com posed a poem, “Am I A Soldier Of The Cross?” Following the sermon that morning, he read the poem, two lines at a time, and the audience sang it to a tune which was then currently in use. Arlington is the tune now used with “ Am I A Soldier Of The Cross?” It was originally taken from a minuet- melody from the overture of Thomas A. Arne’s opera “ Artaxerxes,” which had been written in 1762. Arne (1710- 1778) was a noted composer of operas. Arlington was first arranged as a sacred tune in 1784 by Ralph Harri son, and published in his hymnal Sacred Harmonies. A SINNER MADE WHOLE William M. Lighthall, the author, was bom in Canada in 1866. He moved to the United States at the age of fifteen, and worked as a telegrapher for the Delaware and Hudson Rail road for thirty years. He was an active Christian layman, serving at various times in official capacities for the Christian Endeavor and the Y.M.C.A. He was a Presbyterian.
