’ARSONAGE

C i f ROOF B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R N ow I can pray without help.” The little fellow’s voice was vibrant. “ Yes, Johnny. I know the Lord Jesus is pleased that you have learned so well. And I’m real proud of you.” “Don’t you like the way I prayed, Mommie? I talked to the Lord about His Word. That’s the Bible, you know. Aren’t you proud of my prayer?” Mother couldn’t miss the bit of green- eye in the question and tone of voice of her “ caboose.” “ Your prayer was precious, Mark. The Lord is always pleased when His children have fellowship with Him in prayer. But we are all happy that Johnny has learned the joy of prayer as you have.” “ Let’s see. Did I know how to pray when I came here?” The voice this time was from an 8 year old who had just crawled into his bed. “No, Danny. But you know now. And better yet, you know and love the Lord to whom you pray. It’s time for three little boys to get to sleep. No talking tonight. I love you.” “ ’Night, Mommie Miller. ’Night, Mommie.” Back in her room Mother collapsed in the big chair. “Why, Lord, do You ask me to look after other people’s children? Haven’t I had enough of my own? I haven’t sought out any of this extra work. “ For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt. 16:25). Did mother really believe that God meant what He said? In review, the needs of these “ other people’s children” passed through Mother’s mind. The one youngster from a Christian home hadn’t learned that the source of all authority, for parents and child alike, is Jesus Christ. He did not know the first rudiments of obedience, nor did he know how to pray. Any extra work, or strain, or responsibility was lost in the splendor of His work in the lives of these little ones. There is no paradox in losing a life in order to save it. Mother really understood this truth as a refreshing surge of strength and joy possessed her being.
