College – Issue 33

THE QUADRANGLE Branch & Community Events

Bangkok Community Event College, in collaboration with St Margaret’s College and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, held a community event for past students, and current, past and prospective parents at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok on Thursday 20 October 2016. Deputy Principal Rob Donaldson and International Student Manager Deanne Gath attended on behalf of the school. Old Boy Jack Krairiksh (9719) took on the responsibility of rounding up those from College, along with prospective families, living in Thailand. Past students from all three schools, ranging from 1972–2012, were delighted to hear of the progress and development of their respective schools. They were then given the opportunity to each say a few words, which was a wonderful way to hear how their time in Christchurch had impacted on their lives. It is important to note this event took place late in 2016, when the country was in mourning for the late King. The event was allowed to take place as it was deemed an “educational exchange”, but needed to comply with the nationwide dress code of black. The mourning period also meant we were not able to report on the event immediately.

schools. Principals Gillian Simpson and Garth Wynne spoke positively about the future of Christchurch, and the place of each school in the city. Our thanks to Chapman Tripp for hosting, especially Colin Fife (12028).

Wellington Branch On 4 May 2017, some 60 Wellington and Wairarapa based Old Boys and their partners dined at Dockside Bar and Restaurant on the Wellington waterfront. The chairman’s welcome was followed by an “ice-breaker session”, during which Old Boys had 10 seconds to explain how going to Christ’s College had affected their lives. Richard Field-Dodgson (7415 “Poppy Junior”) sang grace in five-part harmony. Guest speakers included Ken Wiggins (7640) and Sam Cranfield (6870). Tony Lawrence (4873) was identified as the oldest present, at 91-plus years. To end proceedings, the chairman nominated Anton van der Wilt (9640), Peter Couchman (9014) and Rick Stace (10931) to take over the running of the branch to thunderous applause (and their bewilderment). However, on seeing the substantive reserves retiring treasurer John Vaughan (6352) had built up in the branch account, they accepted the honour and the next day booked overseas holidays. The branch is indebted to John Vaughan for his tremendous contribution over many years.

Auckland Community Event Over 100 alumni from Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College gathered at the Chapman Tripp offices in downtown Auckland to catch up with each other and hear about their respective schools’ progress. We were thrilled to have such a healthy turnout, which included recent leavers from both
