ROUND SQUARE Strength in teamwork
There was an overriding sense of fun, spiced with a hint of chaos, at lunchtime on Upper on Tuesday 16 May.
Right amongst it, in charge of the Round Square Adventure Day Relay was the international student committee, led by prefect Vincent Li. “We wanted to get people together to take part in a huge group activity, to devise a bit of a competition, but most of all to have fun.” The relay took the form of four different sections: food, physical, intellectual and dramatic – and teams from each House required boys with different strengths in order to perform at their best. The food boys had to have guts to tolerate some fiendishly hot relishes; the physical relied on brawn, coordination and speed; the intellectual needed wide-ranging general knowledge; and the dramatic faced a performance in front of the fiercest of critics – teachers Robyn Peers and David Chambers – aiming
for top marks with two enthusiastic thumbs up. After tallying up the points, Richards House were declared winners: their prize, a pizza lunch. Money raised from the Round Square Adventure Day mufti day will benefit Beyond Water, an organisation dedicated to bringing clean, safe drinking water and sanitation solutions to communities in need across East Africa. Round Square Adventure Day was separate from, but complementary to, Arts Week – and the first of what Vincent hopes will become a number of events based on the Round Square IDEALS of internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership and service. In becoming part of the international network of Round Square schools,
College has embraced a more global perspective, making connections with other Round Square schools, and encouraging students to take part in new learning opportunities, through student exchanges, service projects and conferences.
