College – Issue 33

FOOTBALL The 1st XI football side finished the year positively with a 7th= place at national tournament – their highest ranking for some time. This result was based on a consistent level of performance over the week and having the full squad available for selection, which had proved difficult over the season. The team certainly has the ability to perform at the top level, as proved by their defeat of Otago Boys’ High School (OBHS) in the annual winter exchange, a feat that had not been achieved for a few years. The Junior 1st XI entered the Wednesday competition and finished a very creditable 3rd place, after losing their semi-final to eventual winners Cashmere High School in a penalty shootout. The team also took part in the annual winter exchange, where they had a 3–3 draw with OBHS and a 3–2 win against Scots College. There were seven football teams competing in the Mainland football competition on Saturdays and College had a very successful season, with three division titles. The 2nd XI, U14A and U14B sides were division winners, while the 15A and 13A sides finished 2nd in their grades.

HARRIERS The harriers season began with the College cross country, won in their respective grades by Sam Idiens – Year 9, Dominic Edmond – U15, Dion Houston – U16, and Jono Stewart – Senior. This event was followed by the Canterbury Secondary Schools road race and cross country championship. Sam Idiens won the Year 9 grade and Dion Houston was 2nd in the U16 race in the CSS road race championship, and these results

points. In their last play-off match, College lost to Mount Albert Grammar, which meant they came 4th place in New Zealand. Max Darling and Max de Geest were named in the tournament team, in recognition of their performances during the competition. College entered four teams – U23, U20, U17 and U15 – in the Saturday club basketball competition. The U23 and U20 sides were mainly composed of the Senior A squad and competed well against some very good, and older, club sides. The U17 team finished the competition with a succession of victories as evidence of their development throughout the season, while the U15 side qualified for the top eight and came very close to a semi-final spot, before losing the match in the final seconds. The top Junior side travelled to Ashburton for the Years 9 and 10 South Island tournament and finished in 17th place, after winning its last four matches. This was a great result from a team with only three Year 10 players. The remainder of the basketball club played interschool matches on Friday night, with eight teams competing in various age groups and divisions.
