College – Issue 33

SKIING Top College skiers have a couple of opportunities each year to compete for school. They dominated the Canterbury boys’ ski team event, once again claiming the title. Following this event, a group of boys travelled to Wanaka to compete in the South Island Secondary School Ski & Snowboard Championships. Team members Cameron Nicolson, Ollie Moginie, Kit Lamb and Nick Houghton were 1st in the Giant Slalom teams event, with Cameron finishing 3rd in the individual rankings. On the second day of competition, Cameron came through to win the boys’ Gravity Cross event, with two other College skiers making it to the semi-finals.

Sam was 2nd in the Year 9 individual event and 2nd in the regional relay event racing for Canterbury, while Dion came 21st in the senior event and 3rd as a member of the Canterbury relay team. At the South Island School Road Championships at Ruapuna the College U16 team came 3rd in the team time trial, while the Senior team just missed a medal when they finished 4th. Michael Audeau and Jono Stewart were both third in their respective road races. In the South Island two-day event in Blenheim, both Michael Audeau and Jono Stewart performed well. Michael was 2nd in both the U15 criterium and road race, while Jono won the U20 road race and came 3rd in the criterium. BADMINTON, TABLE TENNIS, SQUASH College has over 60 boys who compete in Wednesday interschool matches in badminton, table tennis and squash. Each sport has had the involvement of a professional coach, which has enabled each boy to improve his overall performance. Squash had three teams competing, with College Black and College White playing off for

their divisional title. The College Black side of Tristyn Stark, Blake McGuigan, Harry O’Neil, Angus Oh, Tim Bassett and Billy Harrison were the eventual victors. Table tennis had three teams in the competition. The A squad – Vincent Li, Simon Brown, Matthew O’Connor and Futian Zhou – performed very well, winning the B Grade after defeating Emmanuel Christian School. The premier team of Kelvin Gong, Robert Palmer, William Ju, Ralph Chiang and Jeffrey Lai was runner up in the A grade final, losing to a good Burnside side, while the College B2 side won their division.
