College – Issue 33

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Annual Appeal 2017

This year the Annual Appeal raised over $84,000 to help protect and preserve the stained glass windows in the College Chapel.

Many of the Chapel’s windows date from the late 19th or mid-20th century and are irreplaceable. “I am thrilled the Annual Appeal has raised enough money to provide much needed protective glass and restoration work for some of our stained glass windows. The Chapel is at the heart of school life and its stained glass windows are among College’s greatest treasures,” says Chaplain Bosco Peters. Three windows have been identified as needing immediate attention: the east sanctuary or Harper window, which overlooks the altar and commemorates Henry John Chitty Harper, first Bishop of the Diocese of Christchurch and his significant contribution to the development of College; the north sanctuary or William Chambers Harris window, which is dedicated to the memory

of Harris, who was Headmaster at the time the Chapel was built; and the modernist John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens window, the Tree of Life and River of Life – perhaps College’s most famous window – which is signifcantly buckled and needs to be taken out and restored. The work will be carried out by Mr Graham Stewart of Stewart Stained Glass, specialists in the conservation and restoration of stained glass windows. The generous support from over 220 donors ensures these treasured works of art can now be maintained and preserved for many years to come.

The buckled Piper windows, which will be removed and restored.

Reunited with the past Diana Carey and her husband Bruce generously contributed to this year’s Annual Appeal. When they received notice of the Appeal, Diana telephoned College to ask if she could visit the Chapel to see a window she believed had been dedicated to her great-grandfather William Chambers Harris, College’s third Headmaster. Diana was delighted to see the window and read the moving tribute to her ancestor. Her family’s gift will ensure the Harris window is preserved and maintained so that future generations can continue to appreciate this College treasure.
