LESSON FOR DECEMBER 16 Exalting Christ in the Life of the Nation LESSON MATERIAL: Isa. 9:2, 3, 6, 71 Luke 1:26-33. - GOLDEN T E X T : “ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the gov ernment shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Coun sellor, The mighty GodK The everlasting Fa ther, The Prince of Peace" (Isa. 9:6). Outline and Exposition I. T he N eed for C hrist (I sa . 9:2, 3) Dwelling, in darkness and “in the shadow of death,” the only hope for the people of Isaiah’s day (or any day) was in God. Unless He inter vened, this darkness in the earth would only gro’.v deeper and the spir itual deadness of men’s hearts be come more corrupt. However, God did act. He promised increase of national life, joyousness throughout the borders of Israel, and fullness of material blessings. Al- I though the nation had departed from God, He had not forsaken them, and, again, because of His covenant with their fathers, He assured them of blessing to come. II. T he P rophecy of C hrist (I sa . 9:6, 7) God promised a “personal appear ance” in the nation of Israel of One who would relieve its distress and institute a government (eventually) under which it would thrive. He should come as “a child born” and “a son given.” The Son already exist ed; the Child in whom the Son would be revealed, was to be born “flesh of our flesh, bone of our bone.” The names by which this Son and Child was to be called were signifi cant: “Wonderful,” with the full reve lation of God; “Counsellor,” with the omniscience of God; “Mighty God,” with the omnipotence of God; “Ever lasting Father,” with the eternity (or everlastingness) of God; and “Prince of Peace,” with the authority to rule and to put down all opposition to righteous government. This Son and Child was ordained to occupy David’s CARTOON TRACTS Here is the kind of tracts you’ve been waiting: for. MEMORY VERSE: “Blessed, is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psa. 33:12). , AIM: To teach that a country is Christian only to the extent that its citizèns are believers in the Lord Je sus Christ as their personal Saviour. APPROACH: Do you enjoy eating food that has no salt in it? Would you like to walk down the sidewalks at night if there were no lights in y'our city? Salt keeps food from spoiling and makes it better tasting. Lights keep people from hurting thimselves and others in the dark ness; they bring happiness and cheer. The light of the sun brings warmth ■■'nd life, and causes the trees and grass to grow. ' LESSON STORY: One day the. Lord Jesus went up on a. mountain and talked to a large group of people. He told them that Christians are the salt ôf thé earth, and the light of the world.. We speak of our country as à “Christian country,” but in many ways America is far from being a Christian land. Only men and women and boys and girls who have received the Saviour into their hearts can rjfake a country Christian. Those who belong to the Lord Jesus are like salt, for they make life more pleasant for others, and keep sin from growing in our country. \ Christians are also “the light of the world.” Some Christians are hiding their light, and keeping others from seeing the Lord Jesus Christ in their lives. They are not helping others to know the joy and peace that our Lord brings into the hearts of those who believe in Him. One Christian wom an who is both blind and deaf is so joyful that others who are sorrowful, or unhappy, go to her for help. She is bringing much more light into the lives of those about her than are Âiany of us who can see and hear. The best way that boys and girls can help to make our country a Chris tian land is to lead others to the Lord Jesus, and to live for Him in all that they say, and think, and do.
