A Town Grapples with 10 Feet of Popcorn

It began with a dull roar. From corners of the adjacent corn maze, then up along the walls, to the tops of the palace itself, the tiny pops soon became a deafening 12 minutes that shook the town as the sun ripped the seeds right o each husk, hurling them all into the air like blunt projectiles. e combined force of an estimated three trillion popcorn seeds all popping in unison shattered windows for a mile, not to mention ear-drums, and the ensuing avalanche of bursting kernels buried the town, stopping life in its tracks. A hazy dust preceded the wave. Visitors ran for cover, gripped in fear of the atrocities surrounding them, but there was no cover to be taken, other than hastily setup vendor tents and the occasional smaking van. ose that found their automobiles immediately drove into other parked cars. No movement could be made, as if cit- izens were trapped in thick fog, when kernels began to rain down. It smashed roofs and cars, took down trees and ooded into the subway like a gushing tsunami. It soon moved down Doobie-Doo Ave., then up to Neighborstash Rd., devastating all in its path. ousands scurried out of its way, far from the event, and into the neighborhoods surrounding the Corn Palace, dispersing over the next few hours. Some are still reported missing. ere is an eerie silence now, as all business, bus lines and roads are shut down and the University has delayed classes. Local leaders are preparing to guide the city through this rough time; see further in for more on the damage, and recommendations from the city. Metro Museum: All of the exhibits are ruined In terms of timing, no one could have predicted the ironic and devastatingly poor choice to feature an exhibit of All ings Butter at the Cannatown Metropolitan Museum, much less, on the top oor under a vaulted glass ceiling. For weeks the exhibit had "gone so" due to the exhorbitant levels of sun, but as the corn palace exploded down the street, the room collapsed, ultimately becoming a giant mixing bowl of hot popcorn and sloshing butter. Gradually the greasy, mouth-watering mixture made its way downstairs, oozing through the vents and corridors as patrons ed for their lives. Roughly 1,300 pieces of artwork, both on display and in archives, were destroyed by the mess. "It's all ruined, save a sculpture here, or a painting there," said museum curator Alphie Higgins. "en again all the colors and avors work so well together, it's hard to just write the whole thing o."

Wharf crews get stuck as they attempt to cleanup a corn syrup ood resulting from the Corn Palace popping all at once.

Corn Syrup, Sea Salt and More As the wave coursed way through town, it le a range of devastation in its wake. Down by the wharf, what began as popcorn was reduced to crude corn syrup that began to carmelize in the sun. It covered the loading docks and train station completely, wip- ing away dozens of buildings. Wheels, and shoes, became stuck. Onlookers compared it to walking through quicksand or tay, and could only laugh at the expansive sight, caught up in a t of madness and hopeless despair as the economy crashed right before them. Other kernels made it down to the ocean water, but ocials warned that the sea-salted morsels were not as healthy as they are tasty. "For those people shoving it in stfuls into their mouths, just remember that it can carry SAR11, and other bacteria," said Cannatown University Germ Professor Gabby Waits. "And everyone else, we generally shouldn't be eating it o the ground. Ten second rule."

Record Setting Levels All At Once Pegged as the largest such palace in world history, an estimated 420,000 corn husks were used in construction of the palace, which featured a moat, 13 spires, full ball- room and a Denny’s. It was built for the Can- natown eTubular Festival at the beginning of summer, with a new menagerie installed for the Harvest Bowlski’s Fair. Additionally, an 840,000-husk palace with parking garage was built directly behind it, half out of spite, half from necessity, given the city’s mistake in setting the order quantity to 3 in the checkout cart online when the corn palace was rst ordered. Altogether, well over a million husks were sitting in blazing sun- light when the popcorn eruption began. “In retrospect it was probably a very large waste of corn,” said city comptroller Wendy Knight. “We probably could’ve resold a good amount directly to Cracker Barrel.” Following a record-setting summer of heat

and ooding, drought reached such levels that several missing bongs were found, un- covered in the Rezzy Resington Reservoir. Critics say it should have been obvious there was more at stake when the town set about constructing the monstrosity. "Come on, it's Redenbacher 101," said town activist Harry Miles. "Mess'd with corn, came home scorn'd." Unseen Circumstances e critics are wrong , says town insurance adjuster, Chad Hawkins, pointing out that organizers planned for everything but pop- ping. “ere’s no precedent in the natural history of the world.” Hawkins also divulged, at least in the case of the city, there was no ac- tual "ood" policy taken out, only "oof", per- haps a typo--albeit an apparently extraneous and unusable credit that won't do anything to help pay for millions in damages from the syrup. e city may even have to do a Kick- starter to rebuild, unless taxes can be raised. Other damage just can't be quantied by dollar alone, Hawkins explains. One driver, in a fog of popcorn dust, admitted to driving into, and destroying, several area businesses. In another case, a meat-packing plant man- ager admitted that, in the blackout that en- sued, some "other items" may have acciden- tally been jammed into the beef. And then there were the nearly 100 portable toilets at the event; the entire line was pummeled to the ground, creating an absolute bummer of unspeakable magnitude, which spread down the hill into surrounding neighborhoods. “Excavating this pile of shit mixed with pop- corn just might be the worst thing I’ve ever done with my life,” said involuntary parolee Martin Vedemeir, one of fourteen still shov- eling as night fell and temperatures dropped. Such terrible ordeals have the city contem- plating how best to use the emergency money received from the state. While it seems im- perative to restore power, there's a deal right now for bulk tickets to Maui, at some pretty good rates if the whole city agrees to go in on it. "Even if it means stretching three years of rebuilding into three decades, I think we may all need that vacation," says Knight.

A pedestrian braves the corn dust as it settles in suburbs

Instructions from the City, and Closures Along with the University, all Parks & Rec classes are canceled, along with Laser Godzilla at the Planetarium. Highway 9 is blocked up by ultra-large kernels blocking the way (a product of a power terminal next to the corn palace, which also amplied size). "ere's no timeline for xing various parts of the city, one, because of the budget ques- tions, and two, because Rico and Trish both walked o the jobs aer thirty years of lead- ing our maintenance teams here in Canna- town," Sashsa Brickson, spokesperson for the Mayor's Oce, announced at a press confer- ence last night. "We're waiting for someone to step up and take their places, to manage the cleanup of our city." "Anyone? Anyone at all?" she added. e Mayor's oce will work to make sure there is enough in stores to go around--so that each citizen will get their full share of normal bud and wax. Meanwhile, supplies like food will continue to be rationed--partic- ularly munchies. Grocery stores have not re- ported a shortage of produce or health foods. e city also asked citizens to stop ush- ing the popcorn. Five-pound sacks can be brought to proper disposal pits outside town, where crews are working to mulch it quickly. "It's defeating, you just work all day shoving this stu in the shredder," said one worker, "and then you look out at the massive hills of popcorn still out there on the landscape and you realize it'll never end. is is my life now." City council will decide on Maui on Tuesday.

Elphonso Nugostein (67) - To say Elphie was into some crazy shit would be an understate- ment. Fires. Jungle parties. Ball lightning. Leisure Suits. Who would've thought corn would kill o such a legend? To his family, he was Elphonso, but to his friends and people of the community, he was Elphie the Flagrant, a mischievous prankster who oen pushed the limits beyond what people could handle. Nobody could put a pin on the purpose or reason behind his penchant for small crimes, other than the fattie blunts that always perched out of his le breast pocket. Elphie had no kin or close relatives but did owe about $4,500 in unpaid parking tickets. He also liked to dress up in huge mascot costumes and pretended to hide when he was at-out ripped on a good sativa. Elphie the Flagrant drew some pretty mind-altering murals in his day, but what he’ll be known for most, was that he always had time to eat ice cream and talk about the good old days, back when the band was together.

Fidget Quackenbush (45) will be known for her long term ability to not keep a job. From one to the next, she was a boat captain, sold chicken wings, sold shoes, washed cars, was a hair dresser, lm maker, and nally, balloon lady at the Corn Palace. She will be remembered for her shrill voice and huge red balloons, much bigger than anyone else’s red balloons, that everyone used to love. Fidget was born and raised in Fickleroots. She spent many years in the Highlands aer col- lege, studying native beans and a rare form of alpine succotash passed down from the natives. While the crosswinds of life would take her around the globe, she always spoke fondly of times spent preparing corn and beans around a hearth. Maybe deep down it was that love of succotash that led her to the Corn Palace, where she worked with glee until her nal day. And in a way, she died in a giant succotash explosion. At least, that’s the simplest way for her loving and mourning family to think of it. She'd be happy.

Following that, Burton gained wider fame from his Gnarls Barkley days. A host of guests, ranging from hip hop luminaries like MF Doom and Raekwon to folk-rocker Michael Kiwanuka, are seamlessly inter- twined and serve as textural sweeteners to the throwback foundation established by the album's creators. As with their previous eorts, there's an overwhelming pervasive- ness of, "Why, you ask? Because we can!" dominating their work. But while the trio's initial two oerings le me curious more than captivated, Hell re sparks something that I nd hard to ignore. Of course, without your undivided attention, that may be the easiest thing to do. black midi is not for the faint of heart and Hell re does not deconstruct into bite-sized pieces. e theatrical extravagance is some- thing to behold whether or not you actually enjoy the music itself. Jack White Entering Heaven Alive Following April's quirky, rocking Fear of the Dawn , in July came Entering Heav- en Alive , an acoustic, folkier eort with some notable Zep-

pelin III vibes, starting with the chorus on the opening "A Tip From from You to Me." Much like the English legends to whom White has professed his love, the Michigander is no slouch at writing and performing on both ends of that sonic spectrum. While slightly more straightforward than Dawn , Entering Heaven Alive is unmistakably White and littered with his peculiarities. e individual songs themselves on Heaven might not be quite as strong--I completely understand if the masses prefer Fear of the Dawn --but regardless, in my book, Jack White is two for two in 2022.
