Champlain Township budget approved

Une séance du budget le 31 mars

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Champlain Township has its municipal budget for 2016. Residents will have towait a bit though to find out what will be the overall increase of their property tax rates. Mayor Gary Barton confirmed that the 2016 budget plan received council approval during its March 9 regular session. Council agreed, after some discussion, to a recom- mended five per cent increase to the overall budget compared to the previous year. “We had quite a debate,” saidMayor Bar- ton during a phone interview March 11. The total budget for operations and capital works this year is about $12 million. Mayor Barton said the township is still waiting for information from all the school districts operating within the township area on what their own budgets will be, including property tax rate increases or decreases, so that muni- cipal staff can figure out the total change to the tax rates for Champlain homeowners, businesses, and other property holders as part of the complete property tax bill which will go out in the mail later in the season. The mayor noted that part of the reason for the five-percent increase in the overall budget for the township is due to a $250,000 increase in the cost of policing services from the OPP. On the capital works side of the budget, Mayor Barton reported the budget includes an $800,000 allocation for overall roadwork improvements andmaintenance along with a $600,000 allocation for rehabi- litation work on themunicipal water towers in L’Orignal and Vankleek Hill. “Those are our two big (capital works) issues,” Barton said. Reminder about grants program The South Nation Conservation (SNC) Authority is looking for a few good groups or individuals to help out with grants for local projects and programs dealing with environmental protection and awa- reness. The regional conservation agency is also looking for volunteers to sit on any one of the four advisory committees dealing with communications, clean water, fish and wildlife, and forestry issues. The committees meet four to six times a year and committee members receive a mileage allowance to help cover travel expenses. Committees review and make recommendations to the SNC board on staff project and program proposals dealing with concerns for the South Nation River watershed region. The SNC also reminds non-profit groups and municipalities to get applications in soon for the Community Environmental Grants program to help promote local events or activities dealing with the environment. Grant application forms and details are available at www.nation.on.ca. – Gregg Chamberlain Electronics stolen in Hawkesbury Electronics worth approximately $6,900 were stolen from a residence during a daytime break-in March 5.
