RITAM SRBIJE / RHYTHM OF SERBIA

MUSEUM OF MATCHES, SREMSKI KARLOVCI Unique not only in Serbia, this museum has existed since 2013, despite its owner – academic painter Jovana Popović Benišek – having come into possession of actress Jasna No- vak’s impressive collection back in the late 1990s. As a re- sult of this painter’s two decades of work, but also the con- tinuation of her passion for collecting, this museum today houses around 35,000 matches and stickers from around the world. There are Italian packs decorated with reproduc- tions of paintings of world-renowned artists, a masterpiece of Japanese patience made on onionskin and silk, French matchsticks with spicy motifs and performances etc. As such, this rich collection also testifies to the way fashion, de- sign and society have evolved over the past 170 years.

LEPENSKI VIR MUSEUM, DONJI MILANOVAC The Lepenski Vir Museum was built with the aim of protect- ing the homonymous archaeological site, which boasts arte- facts dating back to the period of 7000-6500 BC. Here, on the banks of the Danube, close to the town of Donji Milano- vac, you will be able to check out the remains of as many as 136 structures – including residential units, necropolises and shrines that suggest that this site was once the spiritual cen- tre of this Mesolithic culture. Occupying the central part of the museum are the remains of an expansive square that hosted the performing of various rituals. Holographic recon- structions of the houses provide graphic depictions of the everyday life of these prehistoric people. Here you can also see replicas of monumental stone sculptures with fish-like appearances that demonstrate the huge importance of the Danube to the inhabitants of Lepenski Vir. The original ver- sions of these large sculptures are preserved at the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade.
