WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON? Looking Forward to Family and Fun in 2019

Time moves fast, doesn’t it? It’s hard to believe our second baby boy is 10 months old. He’s doing really well. He’s crawling all over and is at that stage where he wants to get into everything . Owen loves his baby brother. He’s been really sweet to him, which is the cutest thing to see. It was nice to see a bit of snow down here last month, wasn’t it? We’re wishing for more before the season is over — the Treasure Valley could use it! I’m eager to share the beauty of Idaho winters with my kids, and the new blanket of snow provided the perfect opportunity to do it. I grew up skiing at Bogus, and it’s fun to think of doing the same thing with Owen and his little brother. Katie is also a skier, so hopefully we can pass down some of our skills on the slopes. Last month, we made it to the McCall area with our friends for a weekend of skiing, and Owen made a few trips down the hill. He seems to like it. It’s a little easier to learn when you’re little — it probably helps that the falls aren’t quite as hard.

the game in Florida this fall. We’re getting everyone in on the fun. My brother, his family, my parents, and possibly Katie’s parents will be joining us. While we’re there, you can bet we’re making time to take the kids to Disney World. It will be Owen’s first time, and he’s pretty excited about it. It should be a lot of fun. It’s not often we get the whole family together for a trip like this, and I can’t wait. The other big event of 2019? It’s something you’re invited to because I don’t want to be the only one having fun! We really appreciate our patients, and it’s important to us for you know that. On August 2, we’re hosting our patient appreciation party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Zoo Boise. This is all about YOU. Bring your family and enjoy an evening at the zoo, on us. We’ll be renting out the entire zoo, so this is all about Ustick Dental patients to show you how much you mean to us. It’s going to be fun! I can’t wait to see you there. Space is limited, so please RSVP soon to reserve your spot. It sounds like 2019 is going to be a pretty full and fun year! While time moves quickly, I’m planning to soak it up and enjoy every moment with my family and friends. What are you excited about this year?

While we’re enjoying winter, it’s hard not to look forward to the weather warming up enough to go camping. We have a few camping trips planned for this summer that we’re looking forward to. It’s another fun way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors we’re lucky enough to live next to. Our big trip on the horizon for 2019 is a lot further south: Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida. We’ve wanted to catch a Boise State game out of town for a while, and after we talked it over with our family, we decided to go to

When you’re trying to feed your child, keep them healthy, and prevent them from becoming one of those weird adults with the stunted palate of a 2-year-old, it may feel like you’re faced with an uphill climb. Research shows that fussy eating may be as linked to genetics as it is to upbringing, not to mention the tangle of other psychosocial factors that can fuel a child’s inscrutable food preferences. a Picky Eater 3 TIPS TO PREVENT RAISING 1. KEEP YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN CHECK. When a child first encounters a new food, they’re going to give it the side-eye. That’s natural. In fact, according to a 2003 study, it may take as many as 12 “exposures” to a new food for it to become familiar, much less something they want to eat. If you put too much pressure on them to eat every last bit of the new food, that particular food won’t fare well in their memories and you’ll have to fight those negative associations from then on. Instead, talk about the new food as you’re preparing it, involve your child in the preparation, and have them check it out on their own terms. Normalizing those Brussels sprouts is half the battle. 2. AVOID TURNING VEGETABLES INTO CHORES. You might think that offering your child a reward in return for finishing their green beans is a good way to make sure your child gets That said, there are ways to help your child foster a healthy relationship with food and encourage them to be adventurous eaters.

their nutrients, but it causes more problems than it’s worth. It just reinforces your child’s perception that the green beans are the “bad” food they have to choke down before getting to the good stuff. 3. MAKE A VARIETY OF DISHES. The more monotonous your nightly menu is, the fewer new foods your child will be exposed to, and the harder it will become to introduce healthy newcomers to the table. If your kids like green beans, great, but don’t start serving green beans with every meal just because you know those are the only veggies they’ll eat. Keep it varied and fun, and your kid’s palate will follow. You shouldn’t force your kid to eat food they don’t want to eat, but you shouldn’t cater too closely to their fussy habits either. Present them with a wide variety of the healthy options you want them to eat, and let them discover the joys of taste and texture as they grow.

Because of the off-putting nature of using sticks and bones as tools for oral hygiene, modern inventors have created a toothbrush that overshadows our ancestors’ devices by a long shot. In 2018, Philips, Oral-B, and Prophix released smart toothbrushes to give tech-savvy brushers an entirely different cleaning experience.
