AWELL-EARNED BREAK Looking Forward to Our Summer Travels

For my husband and I, the Fourth of July is almost always a day spent on the water. During the summer, we take every opportunity we can to get out on the boat. One of our favorite pastimes is floating

around water, boating, and various activities. Traverse City, as I’m sure you can guess, is more geared to the latter, but I’m sure it’ll be a blast for both of us. One of the locations I’m most excited to see is the famous Mackinac Island. We’re thinking we’ll spend a day eating some fresh seafood and take the ferry over to the island for a daytrip. I’m sure there will be some delicious fare to check out there, and I’m thrilled to get the chance to explore. If it’s anything like it looks in pictures, it’s sure to be a quaint, unique little place, steeped in history. “Luckily, it’s easy to find compromises: We’ll spend the day riding ATVs around the trails outside of town and the evening perusing the complexities of WWII in a historical tour. ”

around and indulging in a beverage or two. We usually spend our sunny days

out on the river not doing much of anything, but when the kids join us, it’s over to the lake by Brookville, Indiana, for some tubing and swimming.

But boating isn’t all that we’re excited about this July. At the end of the month, we’re finally taking a trip to Traverse City, something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.

My husband and I both love traveling, but we

approach it in very different ways. He’s a history buff, and anytime we spend a few hours in some museum recounting the granular nuances of this war or that,

No matter what we decide to do, it’ll be a welcome respite from the everyday hustle and bustle of work. Running your own business is an ongoing challenge, and we all need a break here and there. But I’ll be eager to get back to doing what I love: helping the fantastic people I call patients, co-workers, and friends.

he’s a happy man. As for myself, I’m more interested in day excursions and trying the delicious local food. Luckily, it’s easy to find compromises: We’ll spend the day riding ATVs around the trails outside of town and the evening perusing the complexities of WWII in a historical tour. And, obviously, we both agree on a few things. For instance, wherever there’s a zip line nearby, we’re sliding on down with the best of them.

IF YOUWANT TO LIVE MORE, SIT LESS

“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”Those are the words of Dr. James Levine, who made headlines back in 2014 when he released the results of years of research into what’s really killing Americans. Just as cigarette use was killing Americans in droves back when the population still smoked, the prevalence of desk jobs is a huge health risk today. Humans, it turns out, are meant to be on their feet and on the go, just like our ancestors were. “We have created for ourselves a modern way of living that clashes with the way we’re meant to be,” Levine says. We’ve seen that sitting can also lead to other health issues, like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and strained eyes and muscles. And if you’re not in good shape (because you sit all day at work), you’re more likely to get injured doing other activities in your life. Levine says that ideally, you’d spend four hours a day on your feet. Of course, that may not be an option for many of you, especially if you work a desk job. We recommend getting up at least once an hour and walking around for a few

minutes. Even a trip to the water cooler is better than nothing! But the real way to combat a sedentary job is to live an active life after hours. A lot of us want to plop down in front of the TV, but we’d be better off taking a long walk after work and spending some time cooking in the kitchen — on our feet, of course. You can also go to a standing desk, or even a treadmill desk —which Levine invented.

Testimonials

“Not only was I recovering from hip surgery, but my fibromyalgia was out of control. I was not able to walk without a walker, and I couldn’t put on a bathing suit in order to get into the swimming pool. For three years, before coming here, I was swimming two to three times a week for 40 minutes and got my heart rate up to 110–120 beats per minute. Then, arthritis took over. At the end of my therapy here, I’m building my time in the water with the goal of 40 minutes (I’m up to 20 minutes); I’m walking 80 yards; my fibromyalgia is under control; my physical strength has increased 75 percent; my core muscles are activated; and I have the information I need to keep me moving forward. The therapists at Stretch PT have been more than supportive, and they explained what they do and why. I’m thankful for their expertise.”

“I entered into Stretch as a runner with hip pain. Stretch’s philosophy and focus on me, my pain, my goals, and my ultimate desire to run again restored my belief that I don’t need to succumb to daily pain and that this was not where my exercise ends. With manual stretching, carefully crafted exercises, and an enjoyable relationship with the staff, Stretch has gotten me to a point of pain-free living, and for that, I am grateful. Thanks, Stretch!”

“Stretch Physical Therapy and Total Wellness provided me with an extremely positive experience. The owner, evaluator, and therapists worked together to help me achieve my therapy goals. I will recommend Stretch to anyone needing therapy, and their wellness program is an additional benefit not offered at other facilities.”

INJURY-FREE FLEXIBILITY Stretch With a Professional by Your Side

Flexibility exercises are one of the four vital components of a well-rounded exercise routine. Stiff, tight muscles can cause discomfort and lead to injury, especially as we age. Not only that, but it’s an often-neglected aspect of fitness, shoved to the side in favor of cardio or strength training. As a result, many

patients, fresh off of a physical therapist’s orders to increase their flexibility, jump into a yoga class to give their body a stretch.

These large-group yoga classes result in injury far more often than one would think, as individual attention and training are simply not possible in the midst of 40 other students. Though careful yoga practitioners usually avoid injury, it is all too easy to overextend yourself and damage muscle tissue. Instead of jumping into yoga at a late age, we recommend a dedicated stretching class instructed by a professional who understands each individual student’s physical limitations. But where do you find such a class? Well, with us at Stretch Physical Therapy, of course! Our classes focus on total body stretching, working gradually toward yoga poses at a pace tailored to even the stiffest of patients. Our classes are taught in a small group setting, allowing you to carefully gauge your body’s reactions and flexibility as we go, learning how each stretch should feel and drastically lowering your risk of injury.

Stretching doesn’t have to be complicated or painful. Instead, take it step by step, with a trained professional by your side.

VISIT THE HAPPIEST PLACES IN THE WORLD — IT’S CONTAGIOUS Destination: Happy People

Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local populace that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious. Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals.

overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long. Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature. THE HAPPIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category, but this year it relinquished the title to its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on Earth, most notably its western fjords like the world- famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th-century waterfront. Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation.
