GLOSSARY (continued) SAT Score Choice — The College Board offers an option, Score Choice, that gives students the freedom to send the scores by sitting (test date) that they feel best represent their ability to colleges and universities, at no additional cost. (Scores from an entire SAT will be sent – scores of individual sections from different sittings cannot be selected independently for sending; for the Subject Tests, students may choose which individual scores to send.) This score-reporting feature is optional to students. Some colleges require students to send all scores. It is important to note the policy of each college to which you apply. Single Choice Early Action — A small number of colleges stipulate that students applying early to them cannot apply early to any other college except public universities and schools abroad. Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale are the single-choice schools. Student Search Service — This College Board program helps colleges identify potential applicants. It also provides students with an opportunity to learn about colleges that might fit the students’ ideal profile of a college. Students indicate their interest in participating by filling out the Student Descriptive Questionnaire of the Admissions Testing Program and the biographical section of the PSAT. The College Board then supplies each particular college with the names and addresses of students with the particular characteristics they specify. (N.B. This service accounts for the reams of mail students will receive during the coming year.) Study Abroad — Any arrangement by which a student completes part of college — typically the junior year but sometimes only a semester or summer — studying in another country. A college may operate its own abroad program or it may have a cooperative arrangement with another American college or with an institution in another country. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) — Some colleges may require it of all international students from non-English speaking countries, regardless of where they have gone to high school. Waiting List — A list of students whom a school hopes to admit should spaces become available after May 1st and, ideally, before August. The number of students taken off waiting lists varies widely from year to year; predictions are difficult to make.
