TWO CIHA ROCKLAND ALUMNI DRAFTED TO THE NHL

Two alumni players from the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) in Rockland were recently drafted to the NHL. Alumni Semyon Der-Arguchintsev and Jasper Weatherby were selected to the 2018

National Hockey League Draft that took place in Dallas, Texas on June 23. Der-Arguchintsev was taken in the third round, 76th overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Weatherby went to the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round, 102nd overall.

Der-Arguchintsev was born in Moscow, Russia and came to the CIHA in Rockland at 13 years old in 2014 to pursue his hockey goals. He first played for the Bantam AAA team where he put up 36 points in 30 games and then moved up to the Minor Midget AAA in 2015. Der-Arguchintsev finished first in assists with 49, first in powerplay assists with 15 and first in points with 70 and was named the Hockey Eastern Ontario Rookie of the Year. After completing his Minor Midget sea- son at CIHA, Der-Arguchintsev was selected 27th overall by the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, where he esta- blished himself as a high-end playmaker and offensive leader on his team. This cen- ter player stands at five-foot-ten and was referred to as one of the most underrated players in this year’s draft, by sports writer David St-Louis. Weatherby came to the CIHA in 2012 and played for the Bantam AAA team, then moving up the following year to play for the Minor Midget AAA team where he had 18 points in 32 games. A native of Ashland, Oregon, Weatherby then decided to play for the Wenatchee Wild of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). “At the beginning of the season, if someone had told me I would be drafted in the NHL, I would have said no way. But

it goes to show, if you work hard anything can happen,” said Weatherby. “I’m not sure many people know this but I grew up going to Sharks games so being drafted by San Jose was a dream come true.” He soon became the top offensive player in the BCHL, leading the league in goals with 37 and in points with 74. He was named the league’s MVP. As the Wild captured the league championship, Weatherby led the playoffs in scoring with 38 points in 20 games. Also a center, Weatherby stands at six- foot-four. He was passed over in the 2016 and 2017 NHL drafts, but this year the San Jose Sharks had their eye on him – trading their 123rd and 139th picks to ensure they would selected him 102nd overall. Both players still have some time to go before they will see the NHL ice. Der-Argu- chintsev will continue to develop his skills with the Petes for two more seasons, while Jasper will attend the University of North Dakota in the NCAA program in Septem- ber. This program has produced other NHL players, such as Jonathan Toews and T.J. Oshie. Der-Arguchintsev and Weatherby join Gabriel Vilardi as alumni selected in the NHL Draft. Vilardi was selected 11th overall to the Los Angeles Kings in the 2017 draft.
