KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE

FEBRUARY 2020 The Time I Met Colonel Sanders And What He Had to Say About Being an Entrepreneur

I once met one of the most iconic businessmen in the world and got him to give a lecture to my marketing class when I taught at Arkansas State University. When I met him, he was an icon in the South, and now his restaurants serve Kentucky Fried Chicken all over the world. I’m sure you’ve guessed who I’m talking about. Back when I did a brief stint teaching marketing classes at ASU, Colonel Sanders himself gave a lecture to my students. I had received my MBA from Arkansas State University and was asked to step in and teach marketing during the upcoming school year. I was a bit hesitant at first but ultimately decided to take the 10-month contract. I’m glad I did because it got me a pretty unique opportunity, to say the least! One day, I read in the paper that a new KFC was opening in Jonesboro and that Colonel Sanders would be at the restaurant’s grand opening. As I was reading, I thought, “Man, it would be great if I could get him to speak to my class.” Then, I decided to give it a shot. I had to figure out how to get in touch with KFC’s marketing department without Google, and somehow, I got them on the phone and asked if Colonel Sanders would be free to give a lecture to my marketing class while he was in town. Even more miraculously, they said yes. So, there I was, a 20-something instructor, about to host the man who would later become a pop culture icon the world over to speak to my marketing class. As we were getting everything set up for Colonel Sanders’ presentation, a few professors caught wind of what was happening and asked if their students could attend as well. When the Colonel gave his presentation, he had an audience of around 200 business students. I don’t remember a lot of what he said exactly (this was over 40 years ago), but I remember him being charismatic and being a great storyteller. He stood in front of the room in his trademark white suit and shared the story of how KFC came into being. He emphasized that it was never too late to start a business, and he encouraged the students to consider becoming entrepreneurs.

Before KFC, the Colonel had left multiple failed businesses in his wake. When he finally started the business that would make him famous, he was in his sixties. He was in his 70s when he gave a presentation in front of my class. As I listened, I think his story planted the seed in my mind that I would like to be an entrepreneur someday. As a young person, I had always wanted to coach basketball, and because of the Colonel’s lecture, I then also wanted to be an entrepreneur. I had thought about the first idea a lot, and eventually got to live it, but I hadn’t thought about the second idea very much until Colonel Sanders’ presentation. When I think back on it, that was one of the key moments that spurred me on to becoming an entrepreneur later in life. Not a lot of people can say they were personally inspired by Colonel Sanders to become a business owner, but I can. I guess you never really know who’s going to inspire you to pursue your calling! -Doug Barnes

KEEP IT GREEN

The Best Eco-Friendly and Kid-Friendly Activities for Earth Day

It can be tough to figure out how to switch up family game nights. Kids can be very attached to their electronics, making it hard to get them invested in anything else. With Earth Day coming up this month, you have the perfect excuse to put down the phones and get outside to save the planet. If you’re looking for ways to spend time with your kids on Earth Day, try these eco-friendly family activities! You can teach your kids a lot about downcycling and upcycling through recycled art. Downcycling is when waste is recycled to become a new product, but there’s a loss of quality as a result. Upcycling is the opposite: Whatever you recycle becomes a product with a higher value. PICK UP TRASH AND MAKE ART WITH IT.

One way to upcycle is to create recycled art. Use old newspapers or magazines to create collages or papier-mâché bowl sculptures around balloons, jars, or your own custom shape with chicken wire. You can also use old plastic or glass bottles as beautiful hanging planters or create a memorable wind chime from jar lids, tin cans, plastic silverware, and old rubber bands. Gardening is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time outdoors. Your kids can learn about caring for another living thing and grow their own vegetables and fruits! A great way to start is to find out what’s in season in your area. If you don’t have an outdoor garden, you can pick out some indoor plants or create a hanging garden with recycled bottles! PLANT A GARDEN.

BUILD A COMPOST SYSTEM.

If you have a garden, the next best thing you can do is start composting at home! Did you know that you can compost your cardboard products? Instead of waiting for the recycling truck every other week, you can use your spare green and brown waste to create incredibly nutritious soil for your garden! Green waste includes vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, nutshells, coffee grounds, etc. Brown waste includes cardboard, dead leaves, paper egg cartons, wine corks, and more. Get a bin and maintain a green-to-brown ratio of 1-to-2. Layer, water, and turn the compost to keep it healthy. It can take anywhere from two months to a year, depending on what you put in and how often you turn it.

We hope you and your family have fun with these planet-loving activities! Stay clean!

Giving Kids the Tools for Success Even though every kid loves summer break, an air of excitement surrounds back- to-school shopping. Kids get brand-new markers, pencils, and other supplies to start another school year fresh. Unfortunately, not every kid gets to experience that excitement. In high poverty school districts, as many as 75% of students show up on the first day of school without any of their own supplies. Luckily, one company has risen to the challenge to make sure more students get the school supplies they need. Yoobi is a company that makes school supplies, such as markers and pens, but with a twist. For every Yoobi school supply purchased, they donate supplies to students who need them, particularly those in high-poverty communities. Company founder Ido Leffler thought of the idea while shopping for school supplies with his own children. He noticed “a distinct lack of vision and creativity” in most school supplies and learned later that 99% of teachers pay for supplies out of their own pocket. Armed with this information and some entrepreneurial know-how from previous ventures, Leffler decided something had to change. One survey showed that on average, elementary school teachers pay around $500 of their own money for school supplies for their students. In that scenario, no one wins — either students don’t have supplies or the teachers’ livelihoods suffer. With Yoobi’s help, though, some students will finally get the tools they need to succeed. Yoobi partners with the Kids In Need Foundation to find out which students need supplies the most and which teachers are most likely to have to pay for supplies out of pocket. Then, they send them Yoobi classroom packs, which have enough

supplies for 30 students, including pencils, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, and much more. These supplies may not seem like much, but simply giving students their own supplies can boost their confidence and desire to learn. To date, Yoobi has donated 65 million school supplies to nearly 5 million children in 173,000 classrooms. With their help, a lot more kids get to start of the school year stocked with tools they need to succeed.

THE KEYS TO UNTOLD RICHES In real life, a key is usually just a key. It locks and unlocks a door, and what’s behind the door, more often than not, is not very exciting. When keys appear in movies, though, you’d better pay attention. A key’s power to open what was once closed means it can be an important element in a movie’s storyline — a key can get characters into places, often of untold wealth. Here are a few of the most famous movie keys of all time.

THE SECRET LIES WITH CHARLOTTE — ‘NATIONAL TREASURE’ When Ben Gates finds a

Meerschaum pipe aboard an old cargo ship called the Charlotte, he declares to his companions they are one step closer to finding the treasure. What he didn’t know was that the pipe, when dismantled correctly, became the key to the door that guarded the whole fortune hidden in the tunnels under New York City. While your doors probably don’t have buried treasure behind them, you probably still want your home and vehicles protected from “treasure hunters” who would like nothing more than to take what’s yours. THE KEY TO ONE-EYED WILLY — ‘THE GOONIES’ The search for pirate gold is always rife with booby traps. Luckily, the pirates of One-Eyed Willy’s crew left some devices for getting through them a few hundred years later. One of these devices is an actual skeleton key, which is made in the shape of a skull. While the key only seems to get the Goonies into more trouble, it ultimately leads them to the treasure they seek. THE KEY TO EREBOR — ‘THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG’ If you can’t get in the front door of your home, check if any other entrances are accessible. The front door to Erebor, once home to the dwarves ruled by Thorin Oakenshield’s father, is guarded by a massive fire-breathing dragon. However, a magical key will open a secret entrance door on the side of the mountain. This allows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to slip inside Erebor initially undetected.

DO YOUR PART TO KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL And Maintain Green Living Spaces for Everyone

Have you ever walked through a park and seen a plastic bottle or wrapper lying on the ground? If so, did you pick it up and properly dispose of it? You might not have realized it, but in that moment, you took a small step toward keeping your community — and, by extension, America — beautiful! April is Keep America Beautiful Month, and folks who celebrate aim to help each community in every state stay clean and green. Created by the nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful, this holiday offers a perfect opportunity to roll up your sleeves and work to better the place you live in. Here are three ways to show your appreciation for a green America this month. VOLUNTEER FOR THE GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP. This event is one of America’s largest community improvement programs, with hundreds of thousands of people participating each year. In 2019, over 550,000 volunteers participated in the GAC to bring natural beauty back into their communities. 2020 marks this event’s 22nd year, and you can be a part of it this month! Volunteer your time with a local Keep America Beautiful affiliate or another community improvement program close to home. Do your part to clean up your parks and spread awareness today.

START PLOGGING. If you’re passionate about staying active and cleaning up your neighborhood, then this is the perfect activity for you! Plogging combines jogging and picking up litter, which takes care of your health and keeps your community clean. Anybody can do it: Just throw on your running shoes, grab a bag, head out the door, and pick up any stray bits of trash you see on your morning jog or evening walk. IMPROVE RECYCLING THROUGH EDUCATION. An important goal during Keep America Beautiful Month is to spread awareness about recycling. There are various ways to educate those around you about recycling and encourage them to do their part. At work, for example, you can volunteer to lead a recycling initiative by printing off guides and fostering discussions on why recycling is so essential. At home, you can make a commitment with your family to fulfill the three R’s of recycling: reduce, reuse, recycle.
