From Brixton to Boston: Easter in the USA
Term breaks up and usually I'm on the road within a day or two - and it’s not holiday time (well kind of). I go on tour with a group called Libera and if we have an album to record - like we did last summer - or an album to promote - like this Easter - it’s pretty full on. I left for Boston on the Saturday after term ended but when we got there - and this is a city with an amazing science museum and an important colonialist legacy but there was no time for sightseeing with four concerts in 10 days. There’s internal flights and coach journeys - we travelled from Boston to Washington, onto San Antonio then Chicago, and finally Atlanta - the deep south of the US of A. There are sound checks and
rehearsals, programme signings and radio interviews, concerts and meet and greets and that’s all great but the stuff that’s really important is the downtime or free time. And I am not talking about a couple of hours on a bus here. Downtime is about fun and banter. It’s about hanging out with the other boys and having a good time. This can be table-tennis, football, cycling or cricket. It can involve playing bulldog or racing. It can be a nature trail as in the T Bar M resort in San Antonio where we found a snakeskin but luckily no snake inside! It might involve swimming after dark - you couldn’t do that in London during a cold, wet Easter. When we’re too tired to do anything else, we crash out at the cinema. For those of you who think it’s all play, there is work involved - mornings are usually always about rehearsals or preparations for a concert but that’s only one part of what it means to be in Libera. I flew home on the
12th April, at the end of my sixth trip to the USA, sitting with my mates, joking about our adventures on tour and trying not to think about jet lag or the school work that awaited us….
