BECOMING A PHYSICAL THERAPIST The Same Old Song and Dance Wasn’t Cutting It

Maria, who is our billing administrator, and I am glad to still have her with me. In those days, I worked 12 hours a day, Monday through Friday, and even came in to work on Saturdays. I was the only one who could market AND treat the patients. It was tough, but I’m glad we were able to achieve so much since then. I also had to build trust within the community and with the local doctors — some doctors won’t trust you when you’re first starting out. There was a doctor who knew me from working for other companies, but when I first started out, they didn’t send me a patient for a year. I had to prove myself. Not only did I aim to build a physical therapy group — I had to gain the respect of my peers and my community as well. All the hard work has paid off! Here at Premier Rehab Physical Therapy, we love what we do. We love getting to know our patients, we love building relationships, and we love getting them back to their lives and back to their “normal.” I thoroughly enjoy owning a company that attracts all sorts of different people with similar values and mindsets.

The biggest and coolest thing about my career is that I’m the only owner of Premier Rehab Physical Therapy, and I’m a physical therapist. The journey to becoming a physical therapist started when I was 16. I taught aerobics for a few years, but it was the same thing over and over. While I enjoyed meeting, talking, and teaching the different people throughout each class, it involved the same routine. The curriculum didn’t change — it was the same old song and dance. It became exhausting after a while, and not just physically — it also started to wear on my emotional health. That was when I realized I wanted to do something more than just teach aerobics for the rest of my life. After high school, I went to college and began studying exercise science to earn my Bachelors degree. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do exactly, but I knew this was the field I wanted to be in. Having taught classes before, I started down the teaching path, and I was a teacher for three years for junior high students. But I came to realize that this particular age group didn’t have any interest in getting healthy, caring about their bodies, or doing what’s best for them to the extent adults do. I wanted to get involved with a profession that not only I was passionate about, but so were the people I was interacting with. With this in

mind, I headed back to school, this time to study physical therapy. I almost immediately fell in love with the subject.

It was because of this decision that I’m able to work with people, both staff and patients, who are as passionate about physical fitness and health as I am. These are people who are focused on wanting to move better, get better, and exercise better. There are times when things get a bit challenging, but we’ve all managed to push through. I’ve watched patients manage to get past their bumps in the road and become stronger because of it. When I first started Premier Rehab Physical Therapy, I knew I’d face challenges of my own. I also knew that I could drive forward to achieve my dream. In the beginning, it was only me and I headed back to school, this time to study physical therapy. I almost immediately fell in love with the subject. “

Together, I know that we can give our patients 110 percent as we work with them to reach their goals.

SPRAINED YOUR ANKLE? PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP

Have you ever injured your ankle by doing something simple, like stepping off a curb or kicking a soccer ball? Don’t be discouraged. Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries people face, and they can happen anytime and anywhere. There’s a good reason why ankle sprains are so common. You might not consciously think about something as simple as standing or walking — these motions are second nature to most of us. But when you really think about it, your ankle supports most of your weight, which is why injuring it is so commonplace. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, 23,000 people in the United States will suffer from a sprained ankle, and 45 percent of that number are sports-related injuries.

yourself again. This is what physical therapists strive to help you prevent. Their goal is not only to work with your ankle after the injury to get it back to normal, but also to strengthen the muscles around it to avoid future injuries. The rehabilitation process should be taken at a slow and careful pace, one that you’re comfortable with and that won’t push you beyond your physical capabilities. Your physical therapist will work with you to stretch and strengthen your ankle with a number of exercises, beginning with resistance exercises and eventually progressing to weight-bearing exercises. Keeping an open line of communication with your doctor and physical therapist will help you toward a speedy recovery. Ankle injuries can be tough to get through, but if you work with the professionals and take things slow and steady, you’ll be back up on your feet in no time.

What you might not realize is that once you’ve injured your ankle, there’s a good chance that you could injure

CASTLE HILLS

With five offices to serve our patients located throughout the northern areas of Fort Worth, we have actively worked to increase convenience for our clients. Many of our loyal patients who have been going to our clinics near Fort Worth may not realize we have another clinic located at the edge of Denton County: our Castle Hills location. Castle Hills has been open since April of last year and is located at 1600 FM 544 #200 in The Colony/Lewisville/Carrollton area. The opportunity to provide our community with

another clinic has been really exciting! This facility, like all of our locations, offers the same love, care, and attention we give to everyone who walks through our doors. Whether you want to get your old life back or you’ve come to learn more about physical health, we are here for you! We have a wonderful staff at Castle Hills. Lori Day, PT, MS, is our clinic coordinator. She works hard with Tim Nuckols and Lewis EO to provide expert care to every individual. Not only do they bend over backward to welcome you into the facility, but they work just as hard to make sure you reach your goals.

While each location aims to bring excellence to anyone seeking help or knowledge, not all of our clinics are the same. For instance, Castle Hills is one of only three Premier Rehab locations with a HydroWorx 500 pool as part of our aquatic therapy. We at Premier Rehab Physical Therapy are also happy to announce that we’ll be opening a sixth clinic! While the grand opening is still a couple of months away, we’re looking forward to providing yet another amazing facility for the community. We hope that this sixth facility will bring more opportunities for people seeking to improve their overall health.

HYDROWORX: THE BEST OF AQUATIC THERAPY Underwater Treadmill for Accelerated Rehabilitation

If you have to undergo physical therapy, you may want to consider aquatic or water therapy. Water therapy is often a better alternative for people who struggle with standard therapy due to aching joints, stiff muscles, or any other gravity-induced problem. Many of the obstacles encountered during standard PT can be overcome by warm water. It can relax your body, and the weightlessness will reduce the toll gravity takes on your body. Aquatic physical therapy offers many benefits. It reduces stress, relaxes muscles, protects your joints during exercise, accelerates rehabilitation, increases circulation, and improves your gait. At Premier Rehab Physical Therapy, we understand how much aquatic therapy can help. That’s why we provide the HydroWorx 500 Rehabilitation Pool to our patients. The pool is designed specifically for aquatic rehab and exercise. Unique in the area, these

pools are used for professional rehabilitation and training by sports organizations such as the Dallas Mavericks and universities such as Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas. The 2,500-gallon HydroWorx 500 is 7.5 feet wide and 14 feet long. It has an underwater treadmill with a cushioned treadmill surface, which has the ideal traction for gait training, sports activities, and therapeutic benefits. It also has variable water depth for different physical therapy weight-bearing statuses and resistive water jets for increased resistance and deep-tissue massages. The pool is even equipped with underwater cameras for video monitoring and gait analysis. Don’t hesitate to take the next steps for your recovery. If you believe that aquatic therapy can help you, call Premier Rehab Physical Therapy at 817-498-8585 or email us at premierrehab@sbcglobal.net. Let us help you meet your goals and get you back to your normal.

Explore New Cuisine With Food Subscription Boxes

FOOD SUBSCRIPTION BOXES Trying New Cuisine Has Never Been Easier

Eating the same foods over and over gets old, but it’s often hard to be adventurous when you don’t want to waste money on unappetizing food. Enter the food subscription box. When you sign up for a food subscription box, you’ll have the opportunity to sample new foods without committing much money — or time at the grocery store — to the cause. Here are two tasty food subscription boxes that’ll make your mouth water.

Unfortunately, Graze is not suitable for people with allergies. Their snacks are packed in a facility that also processes nuts, wheat, milk, soy, and egg, and cross-contamination is a strong possibility. Graze prices depend on the services and products you select, but a standard subscription starts at $13.99 per box. Like Try the World, you can purchase snacks separately from their online shop. Customers can pause their subscription for up to 12 weeks or cancel their deliveries at any time. Trying new food should be a fun, stress-free experience. Food subscription boxes allow you to sample new snacks and create foreign meals cheaply and from the comfort of your own home. Try a box the next time you’re feeling adventurous in the kitchen.

TRY THE WORLD . Try the World believes that the most authentic way to discover a new culture from the comfort of your own home is through food. With two price points to choose from, Try the World sends you artisanal and gourmet foods from different cultures each month. Each box comes with a “culture guide” that includes the story behind each food, recipes that incorporate the products, and tips to enhance your food-tasting experience. Like most subscription boxes, you can’t choose which country’s foods you’ll sample. However, you can purchase individual items at Try the World’s

online shop. Customers can pause or cancel their subscription any time, and pricing depends on the length of your subscription. GRAZE. If you like variety, exciting flavor combinations, and wholesome snacks approved by a nutritionist, you’ll love Graze. With this food box subscription, customers create a personalized snacking experience, something that many food subscription services don’t offer! Once you set your preferences, Graze handpicks eight snacks for your box. After you’ve tried your snacks, you can tell Graze how well they know your taste buds.
