“It just seemed like a great opportunity.” Jim Cunningham from Cobourg is a re- tired Ontario dogsled racer who now keeps in touch and occupied with the sport as marshal for dogsledding events.
“Pretty well from Labrador to Alaska, I’ve either competed in or been at these races,” he said, adding that he was happy to accept Perrier’s request to marshal the P-R Dryland for its first year.
“This is a great race,” Cunningham said. “It is a great course for the dogs. There’s a little bit of everything. The dogs are always look- ing out for something around the corner and it provides a challenge for them.”

HAMMOND | The skies are clouded over, the wind is brisk and steady, and there is a distinct nip in the air, but dogs don't care as long as they have a chance to run. In Hammond dozens of dogs ran to their hearts' content over the Oct. 19 weekend during the inaugural Prescott-Russell Dry Land Dog Races at Station 4 Saisons off of Lavigne Road. “Overall it’s been a very good first event,” said Mario Perrier, event organizer. “We’ve been told we have the facilities to hold a world-class event.” A canine choir kept up a howling chorale all weekend as they waited for their turn to get into the traces and onto the trail. Com- petitive dogsled racers from all over Ontario and Québec and from as far as Oregon state in the U.S.A. put their dogs through their paces in team-sled pulling, bike joring, cani- cross, and scooter-sled racing time events. “It’s really a fun little event,” said Dave Turner.“It’s nice and laidback and really fun.” Turner is a dogsled racer from Sandy, OR who was in Québec earlier in the month on a combined buying and racing trip through both Québec and Ontario. He heard about the inaugural P-R Dry Land event and fig- ured it would be a good warm-up for his team before they hit Bristol, ON later in Oc- tober for the Canadian Championships.
