Tory candidate wants Alfred College kept open

son plans to phone PC leader Tim Hudak the next day about Alfred College. “One of the key important things in this election campaign,”she said during a June 4 stop in Alfred, “is making sure that we keep our agricultural industry alive and well in Eastern Ontario.” The future is still uncertain for both the Alfred and Kemptville campuses of the Uni-

versity of Guelph. Incumbent Liberal MPP Grant Crack, with cabinet minister Mad- eleine Meilleur and others in attendance, made a recent announcement that the two colleges could be saved under the French Language Services Act. “My question is this,” said Villeneuve-Rob- ertson, “where were they two months ago when (premier) Kathleen Wynne came into the riding and announced that she was clos- ing down two Eastern Ontario colleges?” The PC candidate credited efforts by la Cité collégiale and Collège Boréal for work- ing on a proposal to keep both Alfred and Kemptville colleges open as agricultural education and research facilities. She would

also support designating Alfred College as an independent and autonomous opera- tion if it was financially feasible. “We need a long-term strategic plan in place,” she said. “But we also need the num- bers, we need the figures, to figure out an appropriate budget.” Villeneuve Robertson’s father, Noble Vil- leneuve, was Ontario agriculture minister in the Mike Harris PC government. He forged an agreement with Guelph University to maintain the Alfred campus for education and research on agriculture. “He was huge in making sure the agricul- ture industry did not die then,” Villeneuve Robertson said.

The“skins”aremetal sheets that are installed on one side of the doors. Offering a breathtaking view of the Ottawa River, the Auberge is located north of the Manoir Carillon, and west of the community centre. “This would not be feasible without Manoir Carillon,” he says, explaining that meals will be prepared at the Manoir and brought to the Auberge. The building is located on a huge lot, opening the way for similar developments in the future. The public can visit the Auberge during a wine and cheese open house June 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

SUMMER SPECIAL D’ÉTÉ

CHUTE-À-BLONDEAU | About a year after the former Saint-Joachim Church rectory in Chute-à-Blondeau got a new owner, the landmark building will soon have a new vocation. Last year, Dr. Joseph D’Ignazio, owner of the Manoir Carillon residence for senior citizens across the street, purchased the stone building from the Roman Catholic parish. For the past year, renovations have been continuing to transform the home into Auberge Carillon, a five-room boarding house for autonomous senior citizens. “The floors, ceilings and walls have all been replaced,” says Dr. D’Ignazio during a tour of the waterfront property last week. Fortunately, the upgrades have been
