Getting to the Heart of Parenting Study Guide

FOR PERSONAL APPLICATION These aspects of the study can be used in between group sessions on your own, either with your spouse or individually as part of your devotional and confession life.

Do Something During the week ahead, turn your learning into doing.

Briefly describe, in writing, a few recent parenting episodes in which you properly addressed your child’s heart. What elements are common to these episodes? Based on these “wins,” build a short protocol to use for purposeful heart training going forward. Write a similar list of episodes in which you settled for nailing apples. What elements are common to these episodes? Build a short protocol for preventing these sorts of situations, and for dealing with them effectively when they unexpectedly arise. This may involve postponing the training until a more settled moment. By the way, which list is longer? Prayerfully identify, with your mate if you are married, a key heart issue that your child is particularly beset with at present. Plan an intentional heart-training session to deal with the issue, using your new protocol. Make the event pleasant—maybe over donuts, or at a special venue. Tell the child about the date in advance, so that they will not feel tricked by the outing. Search Me, O God For introspection during the coming week. Is apple nailing my habit? Why is it my habit—am I too busy to parent properly? Resentful of my children? Focused on my own priorities? What practical steps can I take to fix my own heart, priorities and schedule so that I serve and train my children properly? Whom do I know that does a good job of training their children’s hearts? What can I learn by watching them, and would they be open to talking with me about how they do it? Want to Know More? For a full-orbed picture of Jesus’s teaching on the heart as source of human behavior, read and study the complete passages excerpted above: Matthew 15:1-20 and Luke 6:43-45 , and add Matthew 12:33-37 , Mark 7:1-23 , and the OT passage cited by Jesus, Isaiah 29:11-14 .
