legal advice, a general understanding of legal matters and precedents will be of real help many times. Beginning with pre-maritial prob lems, the author proceeds to marriage, parent-child relationships, government and the family, wills, copyrights, rec ords and confidences, civil and mili tary responsibilities of the minister, legal aspects of religious institutions, property, and courts and proceedings. Practice as generally found among the states is summarized, with excep tions of note observed. The reader is advised in all cases of specific prob lems to consult a lawyer for the exact laws of a particular state pertaining to the problem. The book would be a useful addition to the theological seminary library. — 256 pages; cloth; Channel Press, Manhasset, N.Y. Harold St. John, a Portrait By Patricia St. John The subject of this biography of a father by his daughter was a British Plymouth Brother. Like so many oth ers, he discovered in his heart a great yearning for study, but was denied formal application to it when his father died, leaving his mother with six children. Providentially, at the age of eighteen, God wrestled with him, as with Jacob of old, and con quered his heart. With avid devotion to the study of the Bible, and a call from God to go to South America, Mr. St. John exhibited a most re markable and varied life of evange listic and missionary work. He stu died homoeopathic medicine, and used his knowledge to good results. For the greater part of forty years he travelled around the world min istering to high and low alike. He car ried more books than clothing. The account is full of homey incidents and accounts of unusual dealings of God with individuals under Mr. St. John’s ministry. This is a study in direct evangelism on a faith basis, and it turns out to be a faith tonic. — ix, 182 pages; cloth; Loizeaux Bros., New York; $3.25. John's Wonderful Gospel By Ivor Powell

There are numbers of ways to approach a book of the Bible. We often use the word “commentary” in a rather loose manner. Comments may be of a wide variety. An expo sition, or as Dr. Ironside used to title many of his books, “ lectures on . . .,” seeks to tie together more meaning fully the whole book. The author of this volume has lived with the Gos pel of John for thirty-five years. While he draws on the labors of others, no tably A. W. Pink, H. C. Ryle, and Matthew Henry, the bulk of the ma terial is his own. In effect it is a series of studies on the various sec tions of the Gospel designed to make the book preachable, for Mr. Powell is preacher and evangelist. One sees in the book an ability to use descriptive language effectively. The outlines and the development of them both exhibit this. The author’s first caption for John l.T-18 is “ Eter nity until a Certain Friday.” Andrew is called “ a great go-getter, the patron saint of all who seek souls for Christ” (p. 47). Practically every verse comes in for comment. After each extended section, homiletical suggestions and outlines are offered, some being re printed from some of the author’s former books. Dispensational under standings are displayed. It is rather peculiar that Pink’s use of the mod em Greek ito for en is. used as the verb for ‘to be’ in John 1:1 without comment. One will not follow every interpretation, nor appreciate every application, but there is much of use and value in this volume.—443 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $6.95. The Minister's Law Handbook By G. Stanley Joslin The Dean' of the Lamar School of Law at Emory University digests here the laws of the United States as they pertain to the work of the ministry. Sooner or later every pastor is faced with legal problems, both relating to himself and to his parishioners. A great many of these problems arise within the area of family and inter family relationships. The author has specialized in this field of legal prac tice for years. While the minister does not wish, nor is he qualified, to give
