to become back-to-back winners in the Thomson Trophy – winning it for the second time. Josh Book, in his last game for the school, led the way in the final with 45 points and 14 rebounds while Hunter Adam added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Josh was named finals MVP. In the traditional Otago Boys’ High School fixture in a packed home gym, we pushed the pace and ended up taking the win 125-68. In our third ever win against Otago Boys’ in the inter-school fixture, this became the biggest ever win over the school – another very impressive performance. While we missed out on South Island and National tournaments again due to the pandemic, the team can still be very proud of the way it played and the impressive, undefeated season. The 10 boys returning will be looking forward to carrying on the Year 13s legacy, and what has been built in previous years. Thanks to all the parents for their support throughout the season. SENIOR BLACK BASKETBALL
Manager: Chris Waugh Coach: Canterbury Rams Team: Jack Brent, Will Churcher, Harry Dargue, Josh Ford, Guy Greening, Leo Li, Hamish McCulloch, Will Patchett, Bradley Shearer, Michael Taylor The Senior Black team surprised itself as much as anyone with a strong performance this year. In some games, the team dominated from start to finish, while other contests were more closely fought. From the start of the year, the wins kept flowing and were often coolly executed as each player started to cement himself in his areas of strength.
The commitment to training was largely very strong, and, as a result, there were notable improvements in many players, as well as in the team play overall. Team members consistently showed excellent sportsmanship, even to the extent that they would – when the score differential was big enough – forgive a few points to players on opposing teams who were not getting a lot of court time. The team’s nemesis throughout the tournament, and, inevitably, the opposition in the final, was Rangiora New Life School, whose more aggressive style of play, combined
with the home advantage, got the better of College Senior Black. Notwithstanding this, the team finished in the spirit they played all season – with the stronger players stepping aside to offer the developing players the opportunities to score and ensuring the spirit of sportsmanship was strong all the way. This was the epitome of a great social team, with the players competing well, having fun, and enjoying each other’s company. The team’s performance was driven by very strong specific skills in the form of the ability of Bradley Shearer and Harry Dargue to score from the
