YEAR 9 BLACK BASKETBALL Manager: Elaine Tang Coach: Ashleigh Adamson
Team: Max Hao, Jacob Jacques, James Johnson, Basti Julian, Harry Lee, Geordie Pavey, Charlie Raine, Ethan Yao, George Young The Year 9 Black team was an energetic, enthusiastic, and keen group of boys who really enjoyed the game. The season kicked off against St Andrew’s College (STAC). The boys started well and with the score at 21–17 to the opposition at half-time, it looked like College could bring it back. However, STAC really stepped up, winning the game 54–29. It was a great game, with the
comprised several players who were playing two winter codes, with many turning up to basketball on a Saturday afternoon having already played a football or rugby match. The season started with a grading game against Burnside Green, with the team winning 67–61 before moving on to the first round in the CBA Lower-Middle Grade. In this round, there were losses to Selwyn and Kaiapoi and wins against Celebration Lions, 66–57, and in the derby match against College White, 70–45. In both matches, Rico Steere was the top scorer, with Alf Markham scoring 19 points and 12 steals in the College match. After the partial first round, the team completed the championship round of seven matches. The round started with an impressive 83–26 win over Christchurch Boys’ High School Black, with several players contributing to the scoreboard. This was followed with a loss to North Canterbury, 64–69, but the team bounced back with a hard-fought win over Burnside Green, 71–67. The match was tied 50–50 at the start of the 4th quarter but the College team rallied and played some clutch basketball to take the match, with Rico scoring 21. Next was a 75–47 win over CBHS Blue, with five players scoring more than 10 points. This was a strength of the team and although there were regular players top scoring, points were contributed by all. Fast breaks and passing to the open man was a key feature of team play throughout the year. In the final match of Term 2 at Ara,
where several players from both sides fouled out, there were lead changes and a close finish, with College shooting a three-pointer on the buzzer for the win. However, the shot did not go in and free throws were missed on full-time for a 70-67 loss. The last match of the round was against Selwyn Hawks and was effectively a quarter-final match, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals. The fast-breaking and passing game was key in this match with an eventual
win, 69–59. In the semi-final, College was up against Burnside White, who the team had defeated earlier in the season. College led 29–25 at the half and it was 55–55 at the start of the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, Burnside maintained its composure to finish strongly, with College losing 65–73 to end the season. Overall, the team came together very well and played some great team basketball
