Leading Ladies This Mother’s Day, I want to put the spotlight on the women who played such important parts in my life: my mom and my grandmothers. These amazing women helped me so much over the years, and they continue to guide my life today.

TO THE WOMEN WHO RAISED ME

remember howmany late nights she had to work to close up. I would call her late at night when she worked and wait up until she got home. She’d always bring me food from the restaurant. I spent a lot of time eating good food with my mom. She made a point to take me out to lunch, just the two of us. She called them “dates,” and we would just spend some quality time together.

A lot of people don’t realize my mom, Sheila, is currently working at the practice. She’s been lending a hand at the front desk and is a huge help. Working with your parent might sound stressful to some people, but I have been fortunate. It’s been really good so far, but I had no concerns about bringing her into the office. My mom has a background in business management, and she’s one of the most hardworking people I know.

I am fortunate to have a lot of family support inmy life. My grandmothers on bothmy parents’ sides were a big part of my life. I spent a lot of time at my paternal grandmother’s house. Grandma loved playing card games, and she was really competitive. When we sat down to play Uno, all the kids really wanted to beat her. Her home was such a loving environment, and I appreciate having that inmy childhood.

My maternal grandmother, Gloria, also loved card games. She would host big card parties at her house. Her basement would be full of friends and family playing cards and having a good time. As I mentioned last month, Gloria is the grandmother who got me into bowling. We spent a lot of time hanging out at the bowling alley, and I loved every minute of it.

Momworked so hard to put herself through college and get her business degree while raising me. I was the first child, and my mom often had to take me to the library when she needed to study. While she was doing her work, I had to do my homework, which involved reading a book, even though I was too young to know how to read at the time! She really just needed me to stay out of trouble for a while. After she finished college, Mom became the manager of a Mexican restaurant called Chi Chi’s. My mom and both my grandmothers all pushed me to excel and gave me the tools I needed in life. I don’t think I would be here now without their support. They helped me become the person I am today. Happy Mother’s Day to all the great moms and grandmothers out there. You do so much and deserve far more recognition than you get.

Hand-Washing vs. Dishwasher

your dishes are disinfected. Even if the water from your sink could get that hot, you wouldn’t want to stick your hand in it. Which brings us to the science experiment that is your kitchen sponge. Dr. Philip Tierno, a clinical professor in the microbiology and pathology departments at NYU Langone, determined that your kitchen sponge is the single dirtiest item in your house. Soap and water aren’t enough to sanitize your sponge, which is left damp next to your sink after each use. Have you ever noticed that stagnant sponge smell? That’s bacteria growing. And when you wash your dishes by hand, you rub that bacteria all over your plates and silverware. Yum. If you have just a single plate or cup, you obviously don’t want to run them through the dishwasher alone; that would be incredibly wasteful. But the drawbacks of washing by hand are too great to ignore. The best option is to wait until your dishwasher is full, then start up the washing cycle. All your dishes will be clean and disinfected, and you’ll use less water in the process.

We’ve all walked into our kitchens, looked at the dishes stacked high in the sink, and asked, “Is it better to throw those in the dishwasher or wash them by hand?” The dishwasher would certainly save you some time, but many people believe that washing dishes by hand uses less water and electricity. In reality, however, washing your dishes by hand is one of the worst things you can do for both the planet and your wallet. Dishwashers use less water thanwashing by hand. A study conducted in Europe found that individuals who wash dishes by hand tend to use 27 gallons of water to clean just 12 place settings. Meanwhile, modern dishwashers only use 6 gallons of water, and Energy Star appliances use as little as 4 gallons during their wash cycle. The Environmental Protection Agency determined that using a dishwasher instead of washing by hand can save 5,000 gallons of water and $40 in utility costs a year. It’s not just about water! Unless you have incredibly thick dishwashing gloves, you can’t properly clean your dishes by hand. Dishwashers heat water to around 145 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure

A Pain-Free Tomorrow

For over a year, I suffered from sciatica pain. The best decision I made was coming to Horizon PT. I received great therapy, and Dr. Adams and his team helped me get my pain under control. PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP Don’t Let Pain Trap You Inside It’s time to go outside! The warmweather has returned, and with it comes the desire to just go out and “do something” beneath the bright blue sky. But after a winter spent hibernating indoors, it’s important to practice caution before being active again for the first time inmonths. Even if you stay active during the winter, you don’t want to dive into spring and summer activities without preparation. The repetitive motions required for golf, baseball, or swimming can lead to sore, strained, or sprained muscles and tendons in the back and neck. Injuries to shoulders, feet, knees, and hamstring muscles are all too common in the summer, and they can take months to heal. You don’t want a June injury to keep you out of commission until September. It’s not just fun and games that lead to injury. The warmweather also means more chores, like spring cleaning and lawn work. These are physically demanding activities. It’s not uncommon for people to hurt their back or shoulder muscles while cleaning out the garage or mowing the lawn. Before you set out to enjoy the warmweather, here are two things you need to do to avoid an injury. Give Yourself Time toWarmUp If you played sports in high school, you’ll remember howmuch coaches emphasized the importance of stretching. This still applies

even as an adult when you’re about to play a round of golf or spend a few hours gardening. An extra five minutes of static and dynamic stretching is all it takes to properly warm up your muscles and reduce your risk of injury. Get the Green Light FromYour Physical Therapist It’s important to make sure that your body isn’t at risk of injury. Ask your physical therapist to perform an examination to ensure your neck and spine are correctly aligned. This will reduce your risk of injury and help relieve any pressure on your neurological system that could impair your performance. Is your backswing not what it used to be? Your body might be to blame. Your physical therapist can identify areas of weakness and show you how to incorporate easy stretches into your routine to help improve those muscle groups. 2 pounds baby potatoes, halved 1/4 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1/2 packet ranch seasoning Ranch dressing for drizzling

1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives

Bacon bits (optional) Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. Heat grill to medium. In a large pan, toss potatoes with olive oil, lemon juice, and ranch seasoning. Season generously with salt and pepper. 2. Skewer potatoes. (If using wood skewers, be sure to soak in water an hour before

grilling.) Grill until tender and lightly charred, about 15 minutes. 3. Drizzle with ranch and garnish with chives and bacon bits.

game. If you have a car full of storytellers, try “Fortunately, Unfortunately.” The rules are simple. The first person starts by saying, “fortunately,” and mentioning something good about the road trip or the destination.
