Build Meaningful Connections By Practicing Active Listening

“It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy” by Michael Abrashoff is a book I recently finished. It was recommended to me by one of my employees, and the lessons within this book were quite revealing. The book follows a captain who is the new commander of one of the worst ships in the Navy. It had the poorest record, retention rate and evaluation scores. But after two years, the captain turned the ship into one of the best in the Navy, but how? One of the captain’s most essential techniques is to listen to the ship. This means hearing how the ship moved in the water as well as listening to what his sailors were saying. The leadership methods the captain deployed were based on everything his sailors told him. He would actively listen to their thoughts and feelings and connect with them to build relationships. The connection he made with his crew changed the entire culture on the ship because he made them feel valued, heard and appreciated. After reading this book and an article, it got me thinking about how World Listening Day is on July 18. Listening played a massive role in what I was

reading, and it also plays a role at October Kitchen. Have you ever heard the saying, “They have eyes in the back of their head”? Well, I have ears in the back of my head. I can be away from the kitchen and in my office and hear the conversations around me. I can answer questions without my employees knowing that I can hear them. I can also hear our machines and if they are working correctly or not. If the refrigerator sounds different than usual, I know there is a problem. Likewise, if one of my chefs has something cooking in the kitchen, just

THIS TREASURE HUNT WAS A SUCCESS

Teenager Finds the Owner of Stolen Safe

discovery. “I was just amazed that they’d been able to track me down. There are some really nice and good people in this world. They could have kept the money; they could have said they attempted to get a hold of me,” Everett said. And the teenager’s good deed didn’t go unnoticed. Everett gave Tindale a small reward and even offered him a position at his wealth management company. Although Tindale is still in school, Everett told him that the offer will always be open to him at any time.

Do you ever think about searching for buried treasure? If you did, what would you do with it? For some people, if they were to find something, they would keep it for themselves. But 15-year-old George Tindale did no such thing when he discovered a treasure. Tindale is a treasure hunter from Newark, Nottinghamshire. One day, he was combing through River Witham in Grantham, Lincolnshire, with his dad when he came across an incredible discovery. After using a heavy-duty magnet, they pulled a safe containing 2,500 Australian dollars ($1,800 U.S.). The father and son were shocked and amazed by their discovery. They were curious to know who was the owner of the safe and where they were now. After searching through the safe, they found a certificate and expired bank cards that helped them find the rightful owner: businessman Rob Everett. He was robbed over 20 years ago, and he was never able to find his property until now.

While Tindale’s treasure hunt was a monetary success, there’s a priceless lesson to learn from this story: Being honest and giving back is more rewarding than taking. Your courage and honesty are inspiring, George. Thank you for inspiring not only your community in Australia but also us here in the United States.

Tindale contacted Everett, and he visited Everett to return his stolen property a few weeks after the

by the sound the food makes, I can tell if it needs to be flipped over or stirred.

Listening to the food, the equipment, my employees and my customers is how I hear my “ship.” I practice active listening when I’m talking to those around me, and it‘s helped me form relationships with others. Learning how to be an active listener takes practice. I took a workshop a long time ago where I had to sit across from someone as they told me a story. Once they finished speaking, I had to reiterate what they had just told me and provide as many details as possible. It’s a lot harder than it looks, but this exercise has helped me in more ways than one — especially with my customers. We recently got a lovely three-page letter from one of our customers who told us how we helped them. They had a spouse who had health issues, and they needed to change their eating habits. With our help, they could eat

NEED MORE PROTEIN? WHY A HEALTHY BALANCE IS ESSENTIAL

Proteins are the building blocks of life and help grow and repair your hair, skin and muscles. It’s an essential part of a healthy diet, but not all protein sources are created equal. How much protein do you need? The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults get 7 grams of protein for every 20 pounds of body weight. So, for example, a 140-pound person needs about 50 grams of protein a day. What should you eat to get protein? Unfortunately, a food that’s high in protein could also have added saturated fats, sodium and salt, which will make a difference in its health value. For example, if you eat a 4-ounce steak with 22 grams of protein, you will also get about 1,500 milligrams worth of sodium. With protein intake, it’s all about balance and incorporating other nutrients like carbohydrates into your diet. Some foods you can eat that are great sources of dietary proteins are beef, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, beans, peanut butter, hummus, whole grains and nuts. You can also eat dairy products such as milk, yogurt (especially Greek yogurt) and cottage cheese. Try to limit your intake of red meat, bacon, cold cuts, and processed meats. This is when having a healthy eating plate and eating portions of vegetables, whole grains, fruits and healthy proteins are essential to your diet. To learn more about the healthy eating plate, go to MyPlate.gov to see if you’re making every bite count. Is going meat-free healthier? Because of the added ingredients that can negatively affect your diet, some may say that meat-free is a better option. But that’s not automatically the healthiest choice either. Like meat, vegan and vegetarian alternatives like veggie burgers and chicken nuggets may be loaded with salt, sodium and fat. So, even with meat-free options, it’s all about balance. Here at October Kitchen, we make healthy and delicious meals. We cut back on sodium, salts and fats and create dishes that make you and your body happy. October Kitchen makes eating healthy, fun and enjoyable!

Overcoming Inattention STRATEGIES TO FIGHT DISTRACTION

reason for that. Tasks have a way of stretching out unnecessarily when we don’t have to follow any restrictions. So, make some! Determine how much time you need to complete a task, then don’t allow yourself any more than that. Ask a colleague for help staying accountable. You’ll be amazed at how much you get done.

But what can you do? If you’ve ever been on a diet, you know that willpower has its limits. Simply promising you won’t check your email or phone rarely results in long-term success. But if technology is a big part of the problem, it can also be part of the solution. Try putting your email or phone notifications on silent. Or, consider a website blocker to keep you off distracting

With our phones always on standby, we’re more easily distracted than ever. Then there are also interruptions by coworkers or family members, emails or instant messages that divert our attention, household chores that will “only take a minute,” coffee breaks and daydreams. Constant distraction hurts us more than we realize, creating a feedback loop of inattention. It’s time we understand what all this multitasking is doing to our minds and figure out how to break the cycle. No matter how good you think you are at it, multitasking doesn’t exist. What we’re really doing is called task- switching. Our brains can concentrate on only one thing at a time, and the quicker we go back and forth between tasks, the less we pay attention, and the more likely we are to make mistakes. Even worse, research says it takes us a whopping 23 minutes to regain our concentration after being interrupted.

Though we each have to fight our own battles, this isn’t entirely our fault. Popular apps make billions of dollars by sucking our attention away from everything else, so we’re automatically at a disadvantage. And there may be even more than meets the eye. If you have difficulty

concentrating, stress could be the underlying culprit. Get that under control, and distractions might suddenly lose some of their allure.

And mental tricks can still have their place. You probably tend to become productive when you’ve got a deadline crunch, and there’s a
