2026 Rodeo Book 0524

Alex came as a “temporary” resident to Santa Maria in 1978 to work for the City of Santa Maria’s Recreation and Parks Department and never left! In 2025, after working for the department for more than 46 years, Alex retired as the Director of Recreation and Parks, a position he held for the last 30 years. During those years the City’s park system and recreation programs grew to meet the needs of the growing community. His involvement with the Elk’s Rodeo and Parade began in the 1990’s when the department took on the City’s role in providing the logistical support needed for the annual rodeo parade. A great partnership with Elk’s Recreation Foundation over the years grew even stronger when Tina Tonascia assumed the leadership role at the foundation. Over the years, the City and Elk’s Recreation supported one another by collaborating on many community events like the rodeo, parade, fourth of July and the city’s centennial events. The partnership grew even stronger during the COVID 19 pandemic, offering diversions for our local families including the Christmas in the Country, Haunted Hills, drive through events, and drive in movies. As members of the Santa Maria Kiwanis Club, Alex and his wife Julie, helped organize the Kiwanis Rodeo Queen candidates, raising over $500,000. The Kiwanis Club invested these funds in community programs and youth scholarships. Alex also served as a trustee for the Santa Barbara Foundation, board member for Southern California Special Olympics and a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Today, Alex continues to support recreation programs by serving on the board of directors for the People for Leisure and Youth (PLAY), Inc, raising funds to support the programs and services of the city recreation and parks department.
