Exploded Paradigm unveiled

Phase Two of The Laboratory was completed in time for the 2016 Founder’s Day, but during its construction artwork on the hoardings surrounding the building site has become very familiar. The drawings by Andrzej Fanner Brzezina (pictured) charted the history of science at Dulwich, from the 1952 Science block to the new James Caird Hall. The original pieces were composed of one sheet of cartridge paper overlaid by sheets of tracing paper. Science history in a hoarding

As well as being home to Shackleton’s famous boat, the James Caird, The Laboratory now houses Exploded Paradigm, made by the artist Conrad Shawcross in collaboration with pupils from the Art and Science societies (an article about its creation appeared in The Alleynian 703). Unveiled by Lady Sainsbury, the work reflects the notion of a paradigm shift, making it emblematic of the imagination that has often jolted scientific enquiry forward at Dulwich.
