ELEVATE Fall 2026 | Highlands-Cashiers, NC

A fourth High Camp cabin near - ing completion.

High Camp, the dog-friendly mountain- modern retreat in Highlands, gives Futral a chance to design for himself again. Here, he owns the land, funds the work and controls the plan. It is a part of the process he enjoyed when he built spec homes in Atlanta. Some of the vision for High Camp came from his own travels. He had seen mountain chalets in Norway and thought the approach could work in these mountains. He bought plans from Den Outdoors, then began changing them to fit what he wanted. “We tweaked it, added a bathroom here, moved this around, added a foot here.”

Each of the three High Camp cabins fits two bedrooms, two baths and a full kitchen into about 1,000 square feet. Over the past year, the Futrals have also invested in the landscape with Bud Rogers, a familiar face around Highlands, shaping outdoor spaces designed for guests to linger, gather and spend more time outside. Utilities are already in place for five additional buildings, with plans for more over time. “Because this is a personal project, I get to play with it.” “ High Camp on 16 acres near downtown Highlands.
