NOTE

I have been telling everyone I know about what I learned from my interview with Andrew Renfro about fall foliage, the subject of “A Signal in the Trees.” It’s really exciting to uncover a concrete example of just how interconnected the natural world can be on the Plateau. It’s even more exciting to see how that interconnectedness is mirrored in the community. I’ve met new friends in Melanie and Nancy of Spruce Interiors, and I look forward to joining one of their mahjong events sometime. Creating a little order in all the chaos of modern life, while giving myself permission to put my phone down and meet new people, feels completely therapeutic. Derek Taylor opened my eyes to just how deep the roots go, and how it is all coming full circle in front of us with the return of Highlands Hardware. I’m more

than ready to support a local business so deeply committed to the community around it.

I was not expecting to learn about all of the places and relationships Bill Futral has built in these mountains. My conversation with him completely changed my perspective on High Camp and the passion behind it. I can’t wait to see what he and his incredible team build next. And then there was the Reserve. I went into my conversations with the people behind The Reserve Charitable Foundation curious about how a community could raise so much money in a single night. What I found became more inspiring with every conversation. Behind the numbers were relationships, years of volunteer work and people who seemed genuinely invested in what happens beyond the gates. We held three interviews that day. I left with a smile on my face and a heart full of hope. That story begins on the next page. I hope you enjoy discovering it as much as I did.
