But letters had been few and far between for many months. W ith a song in his h ea rt he decided to surprise her, and. come in a t an unexpected moment. He got off, the tra in la te in the evening, hired a rig and drove ou t to th e home of his sw eetheart for whom he had loved and waited so long. When he approached the old home, it was aglare, w ith the noise of laugh ter and music. There were many carriages hitched along th e fence, and th e young man k ep t him self out. of sight, w ent around th e house, in an effort to find out what was going on. F rom the darkness he looked into a big bay window in which a dim ligh t was burning, he saw a sight which sickened him, and he stag gered back into th e ' darkness. It was th e girl for whom he had loved and suffered so many lonely years, in the loving embrace o f'a n o th e r man. He dropped away in -th e darkness, and she never knew th a t he came. He found h er unfaithful, and she never saw the beautiful home he had prepared for her. Beloved, our Lord is going to come a t such a tim e as we th ink not. Will we be found faith fu l when He comes for His Bride? Beading of th e W ill One of th e older w riters in the Church, in discussing the subject of “Di vine Guidance,” tells th e story of a young woman in th e days of th e Cov enanters, who was on her way to a secret place of meeting, for in those days it m eant your life to be found worshipping th e Lord Jesus. She was coming down a hill, when a few hundred yards away she noticed a company of soldiers coming towards h er on horse back. She knew th a t these men were searching for worshippers of th e Christ,
379 and she also felt th a t it would mean not only her life, bu t th e life of all who were assembled th a t morning, if she be tray ed th e place of meeting. She also felt th a t she could not tell a falsehood, and she lifted her h eart to God for guidance, and th ere came to her th a t passage of Scripture, “Take ye no though t how or w hat thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say; for the Holy Ghost shall teach you in th e same hou r what ye ought to say.” A sweet rest came to her spirit. Sooner th a n I can tell you th e story, the officer of th is company accosted h er w ith these words, “W hither away, F a ir Lady?” W ithout the slightest hesitation she replied: “I am on my way to my F a th e r’s house. My B rother died, and His W ill is to be read th is morning, and I have a sh are in the inheritance.” “ I congratulate you, F a ir Lady, upon your good fo rtun e,” replied th e sol dier, as th e company went on its way. “Now, th a t was perfectly tru e. She was on th e way to her FATHER ’S house, for th e F a th e r’s house now is n eith er a t Samaria, nor in Jerusalem , bu t where a company gathers to worship in spirit and in .tru th . H er BROTHER, the one who was “made like unto his b reth ren ,” had died a sacrificial death and His WILL, “The New Testam ent in His blood,” was to be read th a t morn ing, and she Was a joint-heir w ith others in th e g reat inheritance He left to th e saints. ate ate PULPIT POINTERS A Poor Sermon A young man had been preaching in th e presence of a venerable divine, and afte r he had done, he foolishly went to th e old m in ister and inquired, “W hat did you th ink of my sermon, sir? ” “A very poor sermon indeed!” said he. “A poor serm on?” said the young man. “ It took me a long time to study it.” “Ay, no doubt of it.”
