As we celebrate Texarkana Magazine’s three-year print milestone, it has me reflecting on the journey. We often stand “on the shoulders of giants,” but I see it as learning along the way from those who have paved our paths. They are everyday heroes—a supportive spouse or the encouraging dad. Our stories are colored by these silent giants who say, “I helped!” Remember to reminisce, show gratitude, and pass on wisdom this Thanksgiving. Our wins, big and small, we owe much to our mentors. As we move forward, let’s salute them and make them proud. Let me take this moment to say “thank you” to all who have played a part in the success of Texarkana Magazine . Every year during the holiday season, my mother-in-law reaches a frenzied state regarding gifts. From Black Friday shopping to Christmas morning, it is a nonstop race that makes us all forget the reason for the season. None of the rest of us care who bought the most expensive gifts or who spent more on decorations. Any way you can help me navigate this?

Dear Miserable, not Merry, You are not alone in this epic battle. Here are a few examples I have found regarding this issue. Black Friday: “I saw an elderly woman steal an ice cream maker from the cart of a man in an electric wheelchair.” “Someone punched a security guard in the face because they thought he was a customer skipping to the front of the line. He was just walking in the door to start his shift.” Christmas Day: “We traveled to my mother-in-law’s house for Christmas when my children were in elementary school. On Christmas morning, my mother-in-law went to visit another son’s children to watch them open gifts. She instructed us not to allow our children to open gifts until she returned home. Long story short, our seven- and nine-year-olds had to wait to open gifts until 3:00 in the afternoon.” “My mother-in-law made such a big deal out of Christmas that she actually put herself in the hospital due to all the stress. Everything must be perfect: the presents, the decorations, and even the people. The best part is that she told all her friends that it was my fault because I had too many children. I have three. With her son. To whom I am married.”

What on earth is the deal with Black Friday anyway? What has happened to us as a society that we think standing in line at 1 a.m. on the Friday morning after Thanksgiving is a good idea? If your mother-in-law enjoys buying presents, tell her to buy gifts on her computer. Have we become a country of people who think fighting other people for a toaster oven is something we should do in order to celebrate the birth of Jesus? It’s a toaster oven! I, personally, do not think that it is a war on

Christmas. I think it is a war on my Thanksgiving evening that I want to spend by the fire eating leftovers. The holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving, are supposed to be about spending quality time with your family, including your extended family. When I am standing in line outside of a Target, I do not feel like socializing. I don’t want to be with my family or extended family in the middle of the night unless someone is

sick. Let’s be honest, the thrill or the rush of excitement you get from Black Friday shopping has nothing to do with how your children or grandchildren enjoy the holiday season. It is not meant to be a race. Most of us complain throughout the year about shopping, and many of us also complain any time we must face large groups of people. If you put these two together and throw in, buy one get one free candles, you have Black Friday. Why does this appeal to anyone? Try to set the example in your immediate family that the goal is to spend as much time together as possible, to count your blessings, share with the less fortunate, and see the joys of Christmas. The only real race was the first one, and that was not to have a baby on a donkey. These give us pointed examples of how people lose sight of what matters during the holidays. Some of these are extreme examples, but the main idea remains the same. Does it matter how many presents are under the tree? Who cares how much you spend on gifts for your children? No one. So, there is no reason to post on social media about how “blessed” they are by Santa Claus. If you have begged family and friends for money all year long to help make ends meet, do not show off your professionally decorated home and Christmas tree. If you don’t want to accept homemade/sentimental gifts from family members who do not have a lot of extra money, do not post your picture of the Christmas Eve church service with the caption, “Reason for the season.” As for your situation, I suggest setting some boundaries and limiting your exposure. This may seem impossible right now, but give yourself some time to make baby steps. Tell your mother-in-law you and your family have a budget for gifts, and for decorating, and for any other reason you deem pertinent. It really is none of her business. Stand up for yourself. One simple statement about how it does not matter how many presents are under the tree might set her aback. Float the idea of adopting a family for Christmas from a local organization. That would allow the whole family a new perspective on what Christmas really means. If all of this does not work, then perhaps suggest taking a trip instead of celebrating Christmas at home. If she cannot fathom spending Christmas while on vacation somewhere amazing, go without her!

I n the early hours of New Year’s Day 1969, as the world celebrated the dawn of a new year, one man embarked on a journey that would define his life, reshape his values, and inspire a deep commitment to his country. Meet Greg Beck, a United States Marine Corps (USMC) veteran whose story is a testament to duty, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism. For Beck, the decision to join the military was not one he took lightly. He felt an innate sense of duty and a debt to his nation that called him to service. “I owed America,” he reflects. However, his family’s reaction was less than enthusiastic; they worried about his safety and the uncertain future awaiting him. Despite their concerns, Beck’s driving commitment to answer the call of duty inspired his immediate enlistment in the USMC upon his graduation from Genoa High School in 1968. At Camp Lejeune military base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, he trained

as a motor vehicle operator. Immediately following training, he landed, boots on the ground, in Vietnam on July 9, 1969, where he was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He engaged enemy combatants in Operation Pipestone Canyon from July 25 through November 7, 1969, where 71 Marines were killed in action, 852 People’s Army of Vietnam/Viet Cong were killed, and 58 soldiers were captured. His experiences in the war-torn country left an indelible mark on his soul. “I met lots of brothers by other mothers,” he recalls. “Other than that, war is hard to describe. It is ninety percent boredom and ten percent terror.” Without delving into graphic details, he conveys the haunting nature of his wartime experiences with the words, “I’ve seen things that people should not have to see.” Beck’s service in Vietnam came at a significant cost. He lost friends and

comrades, leaving a lasting bitterness. The wounds of war, both seen and unseen, are scars that never truly fade. However, their sacrifices strengthened Beck’s commitment to his values and his love for his country. “I believe my values were pretty well set when I went into the service, but my service certainly cemented those and increased my patriotism and love of country.” Upon his discharge, Beck returned home, where he went to work at International Paper Mill as an apprentice in 1973. In 2014, after 41 dedicated years, he retired as a lab technician. Retirement was just the beginning of a new phase in his lifelong commitment to serving his country. He continued to stand by his fellow veterans, offering mentorship, aid, comfort, and camaraderie. Greg is a well-known and respected leader in this community and has actively served in numerous veteran organizations. Friend, fellow retired United States Air Force veteran, and Miller County Veteran

Service Officer, Thomas Ornberg, shares, “Greg is the lifeblood and master of all Texarkana veterans’ events. He lives by the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) motto, ‘Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another,’ and his actions show he means it!” The city initiated the construction of a Korean and Vietnam War monument on the border of Texas and Arkansas to memorialize those missing and killed in action in the four-states area. However, when plans faltered, Beck and Dan Nicholson, “took the reins,” Ornberg said, “and finished the project within five years. Beck brought the community together through business donations and community labor. The memorial is now the meeting place to honor and remember those lost during the Korean and Vietnam wars.” In 2018, through VVA #278, Beck pioneered the Wagons for Veterans annual fundraiser. Chuckwagons from all over the country make the trip to take part, and 100 percent of the proceeds go towards the nonprofit charity. To date, $64,000 has been raised to help pay for utilities, home repairs, wheelchair ramps, food boxes, etc., for veterans in need. In addition, Beck initiated and has spearheaded the annual local veteran information fair for the past 25 years, inviting various veterans service organizations to all come together in one place to connect veterans to their earned benefits. Through the Texarkana Area Veterans’ Council (TAVC), he also drove numerous functions to raise funds for the purchase of a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) van, which provides free transportation for veterans to and from the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. He continuously directs the annual Veteran’s Day parades and the annual Memorial Day events. This year’s Veteran’s Day parade, November 11, at 11 a.m., will feature 103-year-old World War II combat veteran Jesse Linam as the grand marshall. The theme this year is 150+ years of veterans in Texarkana, in conjunction with the celebration of the Texarkana sesquicentennial. Beck has championed patriotism through the flag project, where hundreds of flags adorn veteran’s graves at both Chapelwood and Memorial Gardens cemeteries in Texas and Arkansas, respectively. His dedication and shining example inspired the Texarkana VFW to

lay flags at Rondo Cemetery as well, and flags are placed throughout the community on six holidays annually. Beck has held many positions now within the TAVC, from president to trustee. He chairs monthly Texarkana Community Veterans Engagement Board (TCVEB) meetings at the Texarkana VA Clinic. He engages and collaborates with public and private partnerships to further the VA’s strategic mission and priorities. Beck’s tireless advocacy to rename a bridge in honor of Zainah Creamer and Kyle Stout, two local fallen soldiers in Afghanistan, was successful, but his commitment to honoring those who serve does not end with veterans. He also built a local law enforcement memorial to pay tribute to officers who have fallen in the line of duty. It is a testament to his unwavering respect for all those who dedicate their lives to public service. Beck’s own legacy is one of service, sacrifice, and tireless dedication to the well-being and remembrance of those who have served their country. His words carry the weight of decades when he shares, “Being a veteran, you have a large family of brothers and sisters who’ve also served. It’s very hard to watch this country deteriorate like it has the last couple of years after so many have served and sacrificed for it over the years.” He is doing his best to ensure those sacrifices are never taken for granted. Greg Beck is not just a veteran; he is a true symbol of patriotism, a testament to the enduring bond among those who have served, a community leader, and a shining example of how one person’s dedication can make a profound and lasting impact. He shows us all what it truly means to honor, remember, and never forsake those who have served.

The sixth annual Wagons for Veterans is set for Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Four States Fairgrounds.

Gates open at 10:45 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 11:15 a.m. Meals start at 11:30 a.m. and will be available until food runs out. Meals cooked the old-fashioned way in cast-iron pots over open fires will be served for the low cost of $15 for all-you-can-eat! There will be live music, a Corvette, Jeep, car, and bike show, Iron Munchers, bounce houses, antique tractors, square dancing, a live auction, military vehicles, and more, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the Wagons for Veterans charity.

Mission Philanthropy builds community and changes lives. East Texas Communities Foundation supports philanthropy by offering simple ways for donors to achieve their charitable goals. Giving Opportunities ETCF works with individuals, families, businesses, financial advisors, and nonprofit organizations to create charitable funds that support a variety of community causes and individual philanthropic interests. The Foundation distributed $12.3 million in grants in 2022 and currently manages over $126 million among 430 unique charitable funds. ETCF offers five fund types including

Mission At the Literacy Council, our mission is to use functional literacy education to empower learners to achieve academic success, develop life skills, and improve workforce competencies in the Texarkana region. We love volunteers who generously give their time teaching our students, helping with office tasks, or providing professional services for our organization. We also appreciate those who may not have time to volunteer, but they can provide financial resources by giving to our annual giving campaign (happening now through December 31),

by donating silent auction items for the annual spelling bee, and by purchasing supplies from our Amazon Wish List (a link is available on our website). Fundraisers & Events We believe everyone should be a lifelong learner, so we have new enrichment classes each semester to help all members of the community engage in educational opportunities. We are currently preparing for our spring semester, which will include free yoga classes, a book club, and arts and crafts, among other offerings. Additionally, our biggest fundraising event of the year is our spelling bee, which will be held in April and celebrates 30 years as a Texarkana tradition. This event includes a spelling bee, drawdown, and a silent auction.

Mission Our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ by providing life skills and risk avoidance education, along with life- affirming pregnancy services, in order to prevent or alleviate a lifestyle crisis. Impact Pathway Resource Center created the Pathway Life Skills and Risk Avoidance workbook for middle-school age students and up in 2020. This medically accurate curriculum, based on scripture, addresses real-world issues youth are facing. It has been used by individual families and various groups, reaching over 250 students through Pathway volunteers, and distributing more than 1,200 copies. In April of 2022, Pathway became affiliated with CareNet, a national evangelical pregnancy center accrediting organization, and opened a Christ-centered pregnancy resource center. This past year, we serviced over 150 clients. We offer all free services including pregnancy testing and verifications, ultrasounds, parenting classes, and a Baby Boutique where clients can redeem the points they earn for coming to class for needed baby items. Pathway also hosts community Vacation Bible Schools. Over the past year, we have hosted four Bible schools at the Washington Community Center and one at the new Boys and Girls Club downtown. We have a Christmas event planned for early December.

Mission We Are Washington is a community- based outreach program formed by the 501(c)(3) I Am A Hero, Inc. The program was founded to help unite the people of the community under the shared goal of investing in the lives of the youth of Texarkana, to help shape them into entrepreneurs and leaders who will eventually better the world in which they live. In the words of founder, Donald Reid, “The community owns Washington, so we are all Washington. You are Washington, your kids are Washington, the entire community is Washington.” Our mission is to help those in the community improve their lives, as well as the lives of others, by bolstering awareness for both children and adults in need. We accomplish this mission by funding/ supporting causes that meet the needs of those who call this community home by providing classes and programs, and hosting community events, Washington ensures that light is shed on the needs to be met in Texarkana and beyond.

The majority of donations contributed to Washington Community Development Center go toward the funding of the plethora of activities and classes conducted at the school. Since WCDC has classrooms and sports leagues where students learn new skills and participate in team sports, there is always a need for more supplies and equipment to assist in furthering the development of the future of our community—today’s youth.
