THE CANCER SURVIVOR'S COMPANION BY: Dr. Frances Goodhart & Lucy Atkins REVIEWED BY: Gerri Smoluk, PhD PEN Book Club

After I finished my treatment, my oncologist told me to go live my life. Now What? After all that intense care for the last 6 months I was suddenly left to my own devices to cope with recovery. This book provides a practical guide to dealing with the emotional fallout of cancer and strategies for achieving our new normal. I found this book to be spot on with respect to my feelings and attitudes to resuming my life after cancer and not constantly thinking about and defining myself as a cancer patient. Each chapter in this award-winning book illustrates each issue with case studies and tips as well as providing coping strategies and exercises. Topics include worries, depression, anger, self-esteem, relationships and sex, fatigue, sleep, and relaxation. I wholeheartedly recommend this to all cancer survivors and their support community. I recently reread this book in preparation for my Eastern Mediterranean cruise (postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19). Part history book, part travel memoir, Pagan Holiday retraces the classic Original Grand Tour as documented by Horace and Pliny from Rome to Cairo in a very entertaining read. The Romans can be considered the first tourists to enjoy “safe and easy travel” 2000 years ago. Using Agrippa's Map from Roman times as inspiration, the author and his girlfriend retrace the ancient route with often humorous results. Mr. Perrottet weaves history with present day observations showing that some things, like tourist traps and hustles, never change. In these days when travel has been leisure travel has been severely curtailed temporarily (I hope!) you can be an arm-chair traveler with this read.
