INSPECTOR LYNLEY SERIES BY: Elizabeth George
As many of you well know, medical visits for patients and their caregivers can be exhausting and tedious. I accompanied my mother to many of her IVIG infusions which sometimes took the entire day. During this time, we poured over many books to ease the incessant waiting and one of our mutual favorite authors quickly became Elizabeth George. Her Inspector Lynley series take place in England where I had lived for some time before moving back to the US to help care for my Mom. Elizabeth George’s ability to transport us out of that clinic and into her tales of murder and intrigue made the time pass and allowed my Mom to escape that room in her mind if not in her body.

George is an extraordinarily prolific writer (the Inspector Lynley series is currently comprised of 20 books!) which means we had more than enough material to get us through this experience. My Mom elected to start from the beginning of the series but, always one to take my own path, I skipped around the series. Though there are several characters and plot lines that span the entire series, it is possible to pick one up and enjoy it without reading the entire series. My personal favorite is Careless in Red. It takes place in a small surfing village in Corwall and begins with Inspector Lynley hiking the ruggedly beautiful Cornish coastline. Enjoy!
