Home fire sends Vars family to hospital

L’année 2015 a été une année riche en événements dans la région. Retour sur certaines des nouvelles qui ont défrayé les manchettes dans notre journal cette année. The year 2015 was marked by many interesting events in the area. Here is a summary of some of the articles that were published during the last year in our newspaper.

Dearman noted that the number of vehicles inside the garage created some challenges for firefigh- ters as the metal of the vehicles helped to heat the scene of the fire. All members of the family and their pets were able to get out of the house. A damage estimate from the fire is not available at pre- sent. Fire fighters were able to save some of the family Christmas gifts from the blaze but could not salvage much of the remaining contents of the house. Fire in Limoges A home was also ravaged by fire in Li- moges on Tuesday. However, we had very little information at press time. The three-year-old’s injuries were described as «severe» while the boy’s was described as havingminor injuries. Both drivers involved in the accident were not injured. Police investigation of the accident conti- nues but there is no report as of press time whether any charges are pending. Overnight Tuesday a severe snowstorm swept over Eastern Ontario, bringing hea- vy snowfall and blowing winds which are creating «drift conditions» and potential «whiteout situations» along highways and backcountry roads. Police and other emer- gency agencies urge residents to stay at home if possible rather than chance driving in the severe stormconditions. Snow remo- val crews are already reporting problems keeping stretches of roads clear while the storm persists.

A Monday afternoon house fire sent the father of a Vars family to hospital for treat- ment of burns. Adrian Dearman, rural sector chief for Ottawa Fire Services, reported that the family is safe but the father has had to go to hospital for treatment of minor burns to his face and leg. None of the injuries are life-threatening. The fire department investigation is on- going at present on the cause of the fire, which began in a garage at the home of the family on Devine Road in Vars. The fire is believed to have ignited at some time around 1 :50 p.m. on Dec. 28. There were four people in the house at the time the fire broke out in the garage. It A Sunday afternoon accident on St-Guil- laume Road near Embrun sent two children to hospital for treatment of injuries. The OPP are investigating the circums- tances behind a collision between a pickup truck and an SUV that occurred over the Boxing Day weekend.The accident occurred Sunday, at about 1 :40 p.m., on St-Guillaume Road in Russell County near the Rockdale Road exit onto Highway 417. Paramedics and other emergency res- ponse crews attended the scene where, ac- cording to the OPP incident report, a pickup truck struck the passenger side of an SUV. There were three people, including the dri- ver, inside the SUV at the time. A three-year-old child and a six-year-old boy were both taken to the Children’s Hospi- tal of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for treatment.

Janvier / January Drouin remporte l’investiture libérale

Francis Drouin (aumilieu dans la photo ci-dessous), remporte l’investiture libérale. Celui-ci faisait face à deux adversaires, soit Estelle Patenaude (à l’avant) et Jacques Taillefer (à l’arrière). C’est à l’aréna de Saint-Isidore que 675 membres du Parti libéral de Glengarry, Prescott et Russell s’étaient donnés rendez-vous afin de choisir leur nouveau candidat.

Drouin Liberal candidate Francis Drouin (in themiddle of the photo) was selected to represent the Liberal party of Glengarry- Prescott-Russell in anticipation of the October federal elections. The young politician defeated rivals Es- telle Patenaude (front) and Jacques Taillefer (at the back). In total, 675 members made their way to the St-Isidore arena to cast their vote.

«T-bone» crash sends kids to hospital

Taggart Miller files environmental assessment Ottawa based Taggart-Miller filed the environmental assessment report on its proposed Capital Region Recovery Centre (CCRC). The CCRC has been the target of controversy since Taggart-Miller’s original proposal several years ago to build a large- scale recycling and disposal facility on the outskirts of Russell Township.
