Through his work, Tom often meets children and uses these moments as opportunities to educate them about limb differences and prosthetics, helping build understanding and curiosity rather than discomfort. Like many people navigating life with limb loss or limb difference, Tom has also faced personal challenges along the way. At times, he has felt a strong need to prove himself — something he jokingly refers to as having a “chip on his shoulder.” In fact, his sisters even nicknamed him “Chip.” While this drive has sometimes brought frustration, Tom continues to work through these emotions as part of his journey. “Don’t hide your limb difference. Tom’s Story
Being born with a limb difference and having only one hand, Tom grew up in an environment where resilience and independence were encouraged from the very beginning. His parents were exceptionally accepting and never overprotective, allowing him to explore the world, face challenges, and learn how to overcome them on his own terms. This upbringing helped Tom develop a strong sense of determination and self- belief. Tom has been a client of ForMotion Clinic for several years and credits his prosthetic team for supporting him throughout his upper limb journey. “My Prosthetists at ForMotion Clinic have played a key role in helping me,” Tom shares. “They’ve created attachments for an arm I can work out with,
helped adapt equipment for my compound bow, and built my myoelectric arm.” Today, Tom is driven by two main goals in life. The first is to be a dedicated and present family man. The second is to share his deep passion for the natural world with others. Tom channels this passion through his business, Hooked on Nature. The name reflects both his love for wildlife and the way he has embraced his prosthetic hook as a meaningful part of his life. Through his work, Tom
