THE SENTIMENT OF THE SEASON

A TIME FOR GIVING THANKS

Like many families on Thanksgiving, mine makes a point of getting together every year. However, we never gather in one particular place since our family is spread all across the country. Lately, we’ve been staying in Florida. But in the past, we’ve made it up to Virginia, where my wife Ashley is from, and even as far as New York or back to my hometown in Illinois. Now that my mom recently moved to Florida, we plan to stay here this year. My family came in from Illinois, and her family came in from Virginia. Not only was it the first time we hosted Thanksgiving, it was the first time both families were together at our house. It was a lot of fun having everyone gathered in one place. Another Thanksgiving memory that has stuck with me over the years comes from when I was in college. During college, I was on the wrestling team, and we had a tournament scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving. That meant two things: I wasn’t going to spend Thanksgiving with my family, and, arguably One of my most memorable Thanksgivings was the

worse, I couldn’t enjoy a Thanksgiving feast. Instead, I had a weigh-in on Thanksgiving. Thankfully, once the tournament was over, my team and I went out for a giant feast of our own. It may have been a little late, but the sentiment of the season was with us. Speaking of the sentiment of the season, it’s always important to take some time and think about what you are thankful for. When you reflect and share what it is you’re thankful for, it helps put life into perspective. I’m thankful for my family, my health, and my clients. I am especially thankful for all the support I’ve received over the years from family, friends, mentors, and clients. All I can say is, “Thank you.” I want to give a special thank-you to my clients. It’s an honor to work with you and to help resolve your situations. Working in law, I meet a lot of fascinating people with unique stories. Some cases are tough, but we push forward.

Another aspect of the holiday I’m thankful for is the food. As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m always eager to sit down to the table and enjoy all the wonderful dishes, from mashed potatoes to pumpkin pie. Here’s another fact about me: I love pumpkin pie. We’re already a big pumpkin household, but I can’t get enough of pumpkin pie. If I could only have one dish, it would probably have to be the pumpkin pie. I might even be known to ask Ashley to do a test run on the pie to make sure we’re prepared for the big day. It doesn’t hurt to do a little taste testing, right?

From my family to yours, we wish you a wonderful and bountiful Thanksgiving.

3 CLEANING ‘RIP-OFFS’ That Actually Work If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But sometimes we stumble across a few hidden gems that make our lives easier. And, when it comes to cleaning house, we can all use a little “easier.” Check out these products you may have already written off and let them surprise you. Dollar Store Cleaning Products If you’ve ever ducked into the local dollar store to buy some Mylar balloons for your niece’s birthday party, you might have noticed the jugs and spray bottles plastered with the word “Awesome.”Surely, this knock-off soap can’t work as well as your brand-name products, right? You’d be surprised. Online reviewers sing Awesome’s praises, suggesting it should really be a higher price for how well it works. Just make sure you wear gloves when you use it. Detergent Pods You use too much soap in your washing machine and dishwasher. At least, that’s what the New York Times reported as the No. 1 complaint from repair people and appliance experts. Modern appliances are designed to use less water, and as soap becomes more concentrated, using too much can damage your machine. That’s what makes detergent pods so handy. They don’t look like they can clean all your dishes or an entire load of clothes, but they actually provide the perfect amount for modern machines. You save money on detergent and machine repair! Foam Cleaning Blocks Anything with “magic” in the title sounds like a scam. For this reason, you may have avoided the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and similar “My experience with the Law Offices of Matthew Konecky has been nothing but pleasant and positive. When dealing with legal matters, it can be a stressful time, and having Attorney Konecky in my corner helped ease the stress that comes with the law. He is extremely knowledgeable of Florida laws, professional, charismatic, honest, and diligent. I’ve trusted him for years with all my legal matters. I highly recommend him for any criminal or civil suits.” –Lizzie Davila “Matthew was very honest and upfront about his strategy and the likely outcomes in my situation. He didn’t guarantee an X or Y outcome, which is a degree of honesty I can appreciate, and it’s what sold me on hiring him. Whether I won or not, I was happy with the fact that he would at least try to delay the hearing. And when it came time, he would appear in court for me, and I could spend the day at work. In the end, my result was a dismissal on both cases, which was the best outcome possible. If you’re reading, thank you, Matthew.” –Ronnie Weeks IFYOU HADAGREAT EXPERIENCEWITH OUR FIRM, WEWOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROMYOU. HERE’SWHAT SOME OFOUR HAPPYCLIENTS HAD TO SAY.

YOUR LEGALRESOURCE Since the snake oil salesmen in the days of old first tricked trusting folks out of their hard-earned cash, consumers have wised up and are quick to write off perceived scams. Still, every now then you get lucky, and the cheap white sponge really does make the stove look like new. But you should still think twice before you say yes to gas station sushi. melamine foam products. But this is one case where the product lives up to its wild claims. Melamine foam is abrasive and can break down and remove material from fine cracks and textures, making it an effective cleaner. It can be used to whiten sneakers, clean tub scum, and remove permanent marker from your fridge.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Vitor Schlosser

You can find a martial arts studio in any town across America. While some cater to different styles, such as karate, kung fu, and taekwondo, we here in South Florida are lucky to have a good number of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studios

Vitor has put his professional fighting days on hold while he builds his business. Accomplishing a goal he had for eight years, Vitor opened the doors to his own school in Sept. 2015. Along with his younger brother, Eric, they teach the young and old about the art of Jiu-Jitsu, which translates to “the gentle art.” Vitor says there is a misconception that martial arts are only for kids. While his youngest student is 3 years old, his oldest started at 68. The reason why someone can learn at an advanced age is because this martial art is the most efficient and the safest to train, and it is the best for self-defense. Vitor truly believes that Jiu-Jitsu can change a person’s life. Schlosser says Jiu-Jitsu is a lifestyle; once you start, it will change everything in your life. “I am still learning today,” he says. He passes this knowledge on to his students, as he “teaches for everybody.” Vitor believes this is what makes his school stand out from the rest. There are no cookie-cutter teaching routines. Each class is different. Although, there will be a new fundamental program that will give students eight weeks of training in fundamental self-defense before starting the standard curriculum. Vitor encourages anyone who wants to get in shape, change how they are feeling, and learn a new skill to give Jiu-Jitsu a try. If you live in the area and want to try a free week of classes, the doors are always open. Come in and see how Jiu-Jitsu can change your life.

(or dojos). Juno Beach is especially lucky to be the home to Schlosser Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Vitor Schlosser sat down with us to talk about what makes his school unique to the area. Vitor Schlosser’s journey began in Vitoria Espirito Santo, Brazil. For Vitor, it began as a way to lose some weight. He started training in Jiu-Jitsu after school. It was then that his love for this martial art kicked in. At the age of 19, Vitor moved to the United States and continued to train. Vitor has competed all over the world and received the silver medal in the 2011 world championships as a brown belt (second-highest ranking belt). He was even a contestant on a fighting reality show. He still competes today and has four professional mixed martial arts fights.

Thanksgiving Feast of Facts

FEAST OF FACTS 4 Things You Didn’t Know About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is celebrated from sea to shining sea. For all the love — and hard work— surrounding this holiday, there are still some surprising facts about it that most people don’t know. Before you sit down to your Thanksgiving feast this year, check out these flavorful fun facts. What’s on the Menu? If you were to go back in time to the first Thanksgiving dinner with the Pilgrims and Wampanoag people in 1621, you might be surprised at the menu. For starters, you wouldn’t find any casseroles, pies, or mashed potatoes on the table. Historians aren’t certain about what was served at that first Thanksgiving, but we do know there were various types of fowl — likely including turkey — corn, deer, and fish. A Tasty Crime In 1623, the Pilgrims celebrated their second Thanksgiving to mark the end of a long drought. Pumpkin pie was served at that feast and has been considered a Thanksgiving staple ever since. This tradition became threatened when Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, banned pumpkin pie in 1644, viewing it as a “pagan pleasure.” This decree extended to the colonies, but the Americans did not throw in the rolling pin — they simply ate their favorite pie in secret until the ban was lifted in 1660. Shop Till You Drop Attempting to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to extend the shopping season a week by moving

Thanksgiving from the last Thursday in November to the second-to-last Thursday. Most of the states refused to comply, and finally Congress stepped in and named the fourth Thursday in November the official day for Thanksgiving — a day that can be the last or second-to-last Thursday, depending on the year. Fruity First Aid No modern

Thanksgiving dinner would be complete without cranberry sauce, but that particular dish didn’t come from the Native Americans. In fact, they used the berries and their bright juice to dye clothing. Cranberries were also used for medicinal purposes. The berries are a natural disinfectant and were used by some tribes on the East Coast to keep wounds from becoming infected.
