A communitymeeting was held at Russell town hall on Tuesday July 19, in order to discuss the future construction of a Tim Hortons coffee shop in the village of Rus- sell. Though not yet officially approved by the municipality, plans for a Russell Tim Hortons have been made and presented to the township administration by Ros Bay Developments Inc. The planned location for the commerce is at the corner of Craig and Broadway, near theMelanie construction project, Foodland and Home Hardware. One of the points brought up during the meeting was the fact that the entrance for the Tim Hortons is to be placed on Broad- way St. rather than Craig St., whereas other businesses such as Home Hardware have theirs directly on Craig. Township administration has assured that this is due to a recent United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) bylawwhich forbids the building of new entrances on counties roads, such as Craig St. Other concerns from citizens were the traffic that this will cause in the area, the noise, the lights as well as the height of the building and the landscaping plans.

Before the plans are approved by the municipality, studies have to be made by various authorities such as the UCPR and the South Nation Conservation Authority, something which can take three to four months to complete. Construction is set to begin in the spring of 2017 and should take about five to 6 months. While this will be a great addition to the Russell economy, it will also bring relief to the ever busy Tim Hortons located in Em- brun, which is always more than crowded with people from both villages.
Jonathan Pitre’s best wishes barbecue A best wishes barbecue will be held at the Russell Fair grounds onWednesday August 10, from4:30 to 8:30 p.m., in honor of Jonathan Pitre whowill be leaving for the United States in a few weeks, to begin treatments that may help improve his quality of life. Jonathan, a 16-year-old resident of Russell, is afflicted by a rare and aggressive form of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a skin disease that causes major blistering of the skin. On August 17, Jonathan and his mother, Tina Boileau, will be leaving for Minnesota, where a pediatric transplant specialist has developed a treatment which requires blood, bone marrow and skin transplants. Although there are many risks associated with the transplant, it has the chance of extending and improving his life. People are invited to attend the event and give their best wishes to Jonathan for the next step of his journey. Those who can’t attend can also send video messages to Jonathan which will then be displayed during the evening. This will be an evening full of music, fun activities and other surprises, all the while being free for everyone.
