A VAMPIRE AND MOANA GO TRICK-OR-TREATING BARNETT FAMILY HALLOWEEN
On Sept. 1, my wife and son were both ready to start decorating for the season. The weather outside may still be hot and beautiful, but inside our house, Nicole has created a cozy fall retreat. It even smells like fall in our house. Meanwhile, Finn is on a mission to turn our home into a real house of horrors. We were a little behind on decorating the new house for fall because we spent a week in San Diego while the water restoration team cleaned up Finn’s waterfall. But we’re back on schedule now and the house certainly shows it. A few weeks ago, we took Finn to Lowes, where they had those big inflatable Halloween decorations on display. Finn became obsessed with them, and long story short, there’s a 16-foot-tall blow-up ghost hanging out on our front lawn. It’s so obnoxious and awesome — we’re like the Halloween Griswolds of our neighborhood. Our family goes bananas for Halloween, mainly because of Finn. We end up swinging by the pop-up Halloween store a few times throughout the season to get all the supplies we need. Ever since he was a baby, Finn has loved going in the Halloween stores and seeing all the scary, gory decorations. It’s a little creepy how into it he is. This Halloween, I’m starting to see how two kids can be raised together and yet develop totally different personalities. When it comes to Halloween, Harlow is the opposite of Finn. Harlow just turned 2, and while she’s still really crazy all the time, she’s also starting to be more of a girly girl. Unlike Finn, Harlow does not care for scary things. When they were shopping for decorations, Nicole had to talk Finn down from fake bloody arms and creepy clown decals, because it would have scared Harlow. It’s pretty wild to see our kids growing up into their different, unique selves. They have the same DNA and are being raised in the same environment with the same experiences, but already it’s clear how different their

personalities will be. Finn has decided he’s going to be a vampire this year, and he wanted Harlow to be a bat. When Harlow heard this, she just shook her head and declared, “No! Me Moana!” She wants to dress like the main character from the Disney movie “Moana.” Nicole
and I were pretty proud to hear this. Moana is a really fierce hero, and it makes us happy to know our little girl views herself as being strong and brave like her favorite character.
This time of year is all about family. Halloween is in a few weeks, and that will kick off the holiday season. There’s a lot of fun coming up, and I am
so happy I get to celebrate with my crazy, wonderful family. Nicole works so hard to make things super special for our kids, and I look forward to seeing how Finn and Harlow continue to grow and discover the world around them.

But as long as Harlow’s having fun and dressing up, I guess that’s okay. Plus, Dad’s gonna dress up like Maui from the movie “Moana,” and Mom says she’ll be a bat for me, so it all works out!

Hello, everyone, this is Finn Barnett. I am so excited because my new house is haunted! Right now, there’s a giant ghost with red eyes and clawed hands waiting to scare anyone who comes too close.
Halloween is just a few weeks away. I hope you all get to eat lots of candy, find the coolest costumes, and have lots of fun with your family.
Okay, it’s not a “real” ghost. It’s a big blow-up lawn ghost we got this year to add to our awesome Halloween decorations.

Halloween is my most favorite holiday of all time! I love monsters and scaring people and spooky decorations. There is so much cool stuff at the stores during Halloween. I really wanted to get some pretend bloody arms and big stickers that look like creepy clowns peeking out your windows, but Mom said it would scare Harlow, my little sister. Instead, we got a spooky town display. It’s like the little Christmas towns some people have inside their house around the holidays, but with skeletons and ghosts instead, so it’s way better. Of course, the very best part of Halloween is the costumes. This year, I’m going to be a vampire for Halloween. Mom’s going to get me fangs and everything! I wanted Harlow to dress up like a bat, because she’s small, but

3 packages unflavored gelatin 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Powdered sugar, to coat
1 cup light corn syrup
Directions
Directions 1. In a mixing bowl, combine gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water. Let sit while you make the syrup. 2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, syrup, salt, and 1/2 cup water until the sugar dissolves. 3. Raise heat to high and bring syrup up to 240 F, using a candy thermometer to check for temperature. 4. With an electric whisk on low speed, slowly whisk syrup into gelatin mixture. Switch speed to high and whip for 15 minutes, until very thick. Fold in vanilla after whipping. 5. Dust a nonmetal baking dish with powdered sugar and spoon mixture into dish. Smooth mixture, top with more powdered sugar, and let stand uncovered overnight. 6. Cut into squares, decorate, and serve.

There are people who would have you believe that monsters live among us all year long. These individuals, referred to as cryptozoologists (or just “wishful thinkers” by their skeptics), believe a hidden animal kingdom exists just beyond the edge of mainstream biological science. Here are three of the weirdest, almost-certainly imaginary “cryptids” to ever capture the human imagination. THE JERSEY DEVIL According to legend, the 1.1 million-acre Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey are home to more than just birds and deer. The story goes that when one Jane Leeds gave birth to her 13th child, she was dismayed to add yet another kid to her responsibilities. She cried out, “Oh, let this one be the devil!” Shortly after the child was born, the boy was transmogrified into a twisted creature with the malformed head of a goat, leathery wings, and a thrashing, forked tail. After slicing the midwife with its ragged claws, the beast flew up the chimney and fled into the trees. Hundreds of years later, the beast is still said to creep the
THE BUNYIP When European settlers began edging into the territory of Aboriginal Australians, they heard whispered, frightened tales of a man-eating “water spirit” that lived in the lakes and rivers of the area. Descriptions of the creature varied wildly. The monster was alternately described as an enormous starfish, an alligator-like creature with the head of an emu, or a massive bulldog-faced beast. But accounts held one thing in common: The monster claimed the lives of any who dared camp near its watery domain. THE LOVELAND FROG One night, near Loveland, Ohio, a man reportedly beheld a trio of bipedal frog-people slapping their webbed feet along the side of the road. If that wasn’t enough, one even had a magic wand, which shot sparks as the man ran off. Apparently, not all mythical beasts are bloodthirsty monsters; some are a little more Kermit than Cthulhu.
