James Finchum, City Administrator, paints a vivid picture of a community steeped in tradition yet unyielding in its adaptability. “This is a place where, if you break down on the side of the road, someone will stop to help you,” Finchum said. “Our sense of community is strong—it’s what has allowed us to face hardships and keep moving forward without losing our positivity.” In the wake of unprecedented flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, Newport’s character was tested like never before. Yet, through the efforts of its leaders, residents, and neighboring cities, Newport has proven that even in the face of devastation, a united community can rebuild stronger than ever. Rich History, Deep Roots Newport’s identity is rooted in its Appalachian heritage. Stories of Scotch- Irish settlers, moonshiners, and family traditions weave through the fabric of this community, lending it a distinct charm. Finchum recalled tales from his own family’s history, where moonshining was less about rebellion and more about survival. “It wasn’t about being an outlaw, like the reality shows make it seem now,” he said. “It was about feeding your family and making a living. Every family did it—it was a tradition brought from the old country.”
