ment approaches that have had a positive impact on the three mainstays of sustainability — people, planet and profit. Joining in 2015, Heritage Envelopes Ltd is one of FTA’s international members from the United King- dom and is based in Blackburn, Lancashire. Al- though the idea of PackMail was born several years ago, it was just last year that Heritage had earned an honorable mention for this very same solution at the 2017 Sustainable Excellence Awards in Phoenix,Arizona. PackMail is “boxless” packaging for shipping and storing envelopes to mail in-serting companies by bounding product between two rigid cardboard ends with film wrap. This design keeps envelopes flat and safe from damage, reduces the environmental foot- print, cuts-back on the amount of waste from packag- ing, storing, handling, and lowers transportation, CO2 output and fuel consumption. Already, approximately 750 million envelopes have shipped using this new solution in the U.K. and Her- itage plans to increase production by 50 percent in 2018. Expansion into new territory like the United States is already in the works. It is currently sourcing engineering and packaging materials partners in the United States to keep the environmental footprint to a minimum, while supporting the American manufac- turing industry. Distinguished Service Award The FTA awarded Howard Vreeland, Chairman and CEO of Anderson & Vreeland, its Distinguished Ser- vice Award in recognition of his lifelong commitment to serving the flexographic industry and for his lead- ership role as FTA Board Chair. “It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be given this award,” said Vreeland. “The FTA is growing even as other industry associations are shrinking because the FTA continues to re-invent itself to help its mem- bers succeed.” Anderson & Vreeland has been associated with the FTA for more than 55 years. In that time the flexo- graphic industry has gone from the analog business of putting marks on substrates to enabling digital high definition printing on nearly any material. “The technologies of label and package printing continue to change and FTA is always on the leading edge,” said Vreeland. “We at Anderson and Vreeland, and our colleagues and partners at FTA, are continu- ally moving forward and finding new ways to help ensure flexographic printers always keep pace with the steady advance of technology.”
