The Award honors those who have helped in contin- uing to advance the flexographic industry toward ex- ceptional performance, productivity and efficiency. In the Prepress Graphics category, a 2018 Techni- cal Innovation Award went to Hamillroad Software Ltd, for its Bellissima Digitally Modulated Screening (DMS). This software reportedly dramatically im- proves flexography’s quality and minimizes com- mon “hardware” issues like press bounce, making it a very strong contender against both digital and gravure printing. It is targeted to address both bar- ring and slurring. The software is said to produce near-perfect flat tines, sharp tinted text and sharp reverse tinted text. In the Prepress – Pressroom category, a 2018 Tech- nical Innovation Award was given to Eaglewood Tech- nologies for its Sitexco Laser Anilox Cleaning System. This machine uses a laser to clean everything down to the microscopic cells of anilox rollers without cre- ating any waste or using consumables, and it logs the data to provide a comprehensive overview of inven- tory. Even further, the system’s power consumption ranges from 1.8-kW to 2.5k-W per hour, which is less than a major household appliance.

shops adopt both offset and flexographic technolo- gies, the event provides those in attendance an op- portunity to learn how to evolve both production process into the future to gain a larger market share. Live demonstrations of Mark Andy Digital One label press and Presstek 34DI digital offset press with ECO-UV will be conducted. Digital One and ECO-UV equipped DI are technologies said to reduce turn- around time, produce high-quality work and increase efficiency for their owners. The entry-level digital hybrid press, Mark Andy Digital One, was designed for profitable micro to short run la- bels. The press is configured with a CMYK dry-toner digital engine, directly followed by a flexo print station. The multi-purpose flexo deck supports PMS spot col- ors, various varnishes, cold foil adhesive, or laminating to meet any label embellishment need.As a single pass hybrid unit, it maintains a diecutting station and rewind delivering ready-to-ship product on a single machine. The Presstek 34DI with the new ECO-UV system will be demonstrated at each session as well. The ECO-UV add-on system instantly dries sheets at deliv- ery so converters can immediately run a second side or head straight to finishing. The new in-line curing system is available as a retro- fit to any existing DI press. ment approaches that have had a positive impact on the three mainstays of sustainability — people, planet and profit. Joining in 2015, Heritage Envelopes Ltd is one of FTA’s international members from the United King- dom and is based in Blackburn, Lancashire. Al- though the idea of PackMail was born several years ago, it was just last year that Heritage had earned an honorable mention for this very same solution at the 2017 Sustainable Excellence Awards in Phoenix,Arizona. PackMail is “boxless” packaging for shipping and storing envelopes to mail in-serting companies by bounding product between two rigid cardboard ends with film wrap. This design keeps envelopes flat and safe from damage, reduces the environmental foot- print, cuts-back on the amount of waste from packag- ing, storing, handling, and lowers transportation, CO2 output and fuel consumption. Already, approximately 750 million envelopes have shipped using this new solution in the U.K. and Her- itage plans to increase production by 50 percent in 2018. Expansion into new territory like the United States is already in the works. It is currently sourcing engineering and packaging materials partners in the United States to keep the environmental footprint to a minimum, while supporting the American manufac- turing industry. Distinguished Service Award The FTA awarded Howard Vreeland, Chairman and CEO of Anderson & Vreeland, its Distinguished Ser- vice Award in recognition of his lifelong commitment to serving the flexographic industry and for his lead- ership role as FTA Board Chair. “It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be given this award,” said Vreeland. “The FTA is growing even as other industry associations are shrinking because the FTA continues to re-invent itself to help its mem- bers succeed.” Anderson & Vreeland has been associated with the FTA for more than 55 years. In that time the flexo- graphic industry has gone from the analog business of putting marks on substrates to enabling digital high definition printing on nearly any material. “The technologies of label and package printing continue to change and FTA is always on the leading edge,” said Vreeland. “We at Anderson and Vreeland, and our colleagues and partners at FTA, are continu- ally moving forward and finding new ways to help ensure flexographic printers always keep pace with the steady advance of technology.”
