STARTING WITH PAIN Addressing Pain Will Make You a Better Pitcher

a self-assessment that asks about the pain and where the pain is coming from, starting with the elbow and shoulder. This assessment gives us insight into the individual’s weakest link. Unless and until we solve this issue, the rest of our pitching goals and objectives

The biggest difference in how we do things at the Ranch is that we begin

with a different kind of paradigm. We are holistic in our approach, the foundation of which is stability, mobility, asymmetries, alignment, and strength balances. With pain at the center of that foundation,

(including velocity, command, movement, changing speed, or recovery) will be far more difficult or impossible to accomplish. By eliminating the pain, the body will allow us to throw harder, throw more often, and recover more quickly. Before we become the best pitchers we can be, we have to first become the best throwers we can be. Failing to address

pitchers who have pain, tightness, tenderness, or fatigue will go no further until the issue is addressed. Our attention to pain is one of seven big differences that separate the Ranch from other schools, training facilities, or academies. Starting with pain means that regardless of whether the pitcher is 8 or 38 years old, we start with the assessment of their pain. We give our athletes

BASEBALL INTRODUCES DESIGNATED HITTER Blomberg Beats Cepeda Into History Books Forget reality TV. If you want quality entertainment, ask any baseball fan about their stance on the designated hitter (DH). Odds are you’ll have animated expressions and detailed facts about the integrity of baseball argued with you for hours. However, before January of 1973, this wasn’t the case. Jan. 11, 1973 saw the introduction of the designated hitter, and thus the first-ever off-season signing of a player specifically to DH. An aging Orlando Cepeda was brought on by the Boston Red Sox, slating him to become the first DH at bat in a major league game. Unfortunately, he would miss that chance by a matter of minutes. The top of the first inning featured three hits and three walks, which brought the Yankees’ Ron Blomberg to plate. This gave him the distinction as the first major leaguer to play a game as a designated hitter. However, Cepeda would get the last laugh when he hit over 20 home runs and was named DH of the year, giving Yankees and Red Sox fans one more point to argue over. Sometimes it’s not doing something completely different, but rather identifying and addressing the current constraints on the body. Most parents and athletes simply never have that conversation or make that evaluation. Instead, they keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. pain will cause the body to morph itself or organize itself differently; otherwise, it will break. Our goal is to quickly identify the possible contributors to the pain, or, in other words, to find out what is keeping an athlete from currently having a healthy, durable, electric arm.
