THE 18TH ANNUAL ULTIMATE PITCHING COACHES BOOT CAMP AT THE TEXAS BASEBALL RANCH

Each December for the past 18 years, Jill and I have hosted a very unique baseball event. We bring in 8 to 10 of the most progressive-thinking leaders currently in our baseball universe and ask them to challenge the audience’s prevalent belief systems and thought processes. imaginable. This year we had seven MLB organizations represented, just under 30 D-I institutions, and dozens of D-II, D-III, NAIA, JC, and high school coaches and academy instructors. For example, Derek Johnson, the MLB pitching coach of the Milwaukee Brewers, was in attendance, as well as two youth 12-and-under travel ball coaches. In other words, the theater was filled with a tremendous mix of experience and ability. The primary mission of the symposium every year is to assist coaches and instructors in evaluating their current training processes and to enhance, improve, augment, and re-engineer their In attendance every year are 150 coaches from almost every level of baseball

methods and procedures where they see possible constraints or inefficiencies.

The event has proven to be incredibly effective and influential to the baseball pitching world as a whole. It has shown itself many times over the past 18 years to be far more than a standard pitching and baseball clinic. The symposium has been the catalyst of many of the leading-edge concepts and paradigms predominant in today’s most influential teachers and leaders. Over the years, many people have asked me how we select our speakers and presenters. The answer is remarkably simple and straightforward: I simply invite the people I would most like to listen to or hear from. What may surprise those of you not intimately familiar with Jill, me, or the Ranch family is that we often include people who would obviously disagree with us or have a significantly different perspective on training than we do at the Ranch.

If you are someone who finds this sort of investigation and synergy intriguing, we do record every presentation, and each year we have a DVD collection available to purchase as an incredible resource for coaches and instructors alike. This past December’s event — with 18 different presentations — can be ordered at www. PitchingCoachesBootcamp.com.

well-being. Download this app or visit Wanderlust’s website for free classes, like the 21-day yoga challenge, which can keep you disciplined and motivated. Additional workshops and events are available for a small subscription fee.

Do all your early morning workout plans blast out of the jet engine when you travel? New time zones and ill-equipped hotel gyms may make you want to put off training. But now, with the internet just a tap away, there’s no excuse to miss a workout. Being away from home doesn’t mean you have to abandon your fitness goals. Check out these apps (most of them are available for free from iTunes or Google Play) and work out wherever your travels take you.

FOR THE FREQUENT FLYER

Don’t miss your workout just because you’re away from your home gym. Use Rise Today to locate a class near you. Use filters to search for the type of class you want, from CrossFit to barre workouts. From “Reach and Root Wake Up” to “Spirit Wake Up,” you can select each morning routine’s intensity. Choose a time and let the gentle voice of your instructor clear away the morning’s inevitable grogginess. Forget breakfast in bed; you’ll feel so much better waking up this way.

STARTING WITH PAIN Addressing Pain Will Make You a Better Pitcher

a self-assessment that asks about the pain and where the pain is coming from, starting with the elbow and shoulder. This assessment gives us insight into the individual’s weakest link. Unless and until we solve this issue, the rest of our pitching goals and objectives

The biggest difference in how we do things at the Ranch is that we begin

with a different kind of paradigm. We are holistic in our approach, the foundation of which is stability, mobility, asymmetries, alignment, and strength balances. With pain at the center of that foundation,

(including velocity, command, movement, changing speed, or recovery) will be far more difficult or impossible to accomplish. By eliminating the pain, the body will allow us to throw harder, throw more often, and recover more quickly. Before we become the best pitchers we can be, we have to first become the best throwers we can be. Failing to address

pitchers who have pain, tightness, tenderness, or fatigue will go no further until the issue is addressed. Our attention to pain is one of seven big differences that separate the Ranch from other schools, training facilities, or academies. Starting with pain means that regardless of whether the pitcher is 8 or 38 years old, we start with the assessment of their pain. We give our athletes

BASEBALL INTRODUCES DESIGNATED HITTER Blomberg Beats Cepeda Into History Books Forget reality TV. If you want quality entertainment, ask any baseball fan about their stance on the designated hitter (DH). Odds are you’ll have animated expressions and detailed facts about the integrity of baseball argued with you for hours. However, before January of 1973, this wasn’t the case. Jan. 11, 1973 saw the introduction of the designated hitter, and thus the first-ever off-season signing of a player specifically to DH. An aging Orlando Cepeda was brought on by the Boston Red Sox, slating him to become the first DH at bat in a major league game. Unfortunately, he would miss that chance by a matter of minutes. The top of the first inning featured three hits and three walks, which brought the Yankees’ Ron Blomberg to plate. This gave him the distinction as the first major leaguer to play a game as a designated hitter. However, Cepeda would get the last laugh when he hit over 20 home runs and was named DH of the year, giving Yankees and Red Sox fans one more point to argue over. Sometimes it’s not doing something completely different, but rather identifying and addressing the current constraints on the body. Most parents and athletes simply never have that conversation or make that evaluation. Instead, they keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. pain will cause the body to morph itself or organize itself differently; otherwise, it will break. Our goal is to quickly identify the possible contributors to the pain, or, in other words, to find out what is keeping an athlete from currently having a healthy, durable, electric arm.

NEW YEAR, NEW TECH! 3 of 2018’s Most Futuristic Gadgets

an optical motion tracking system powered by 10 separate cameras, Cave2 is half virtual reality, half insanely futuristic whiteboard. After donning a pair of 3-D glasses, users, namely scientists and engineers, can fully immerse themselves in whatever they want, whether it’s a visualization of data that describes our solar system or, as exhibited in a recent demonstration, a model of Chicago, complete with real-time crime data.

Along with a collection of short-lived resolutions, each new year brings a staggering array of wild technology. Here are a few of the coolest new gadgets predicted to hit the scene in 2018. A MICROWAVE THAT DOUBLES AS A FLASH FRIDGE For a couple of years now, the Spanish- Korean company Frigondas has been developing a microwave that, in addition to perfectly warming up your leftovers, comes equipped with the ability to rapidly cool down foods. Not only can you use it to freeze fresh foods for later use, but you can toss a beer inside and let it chill in just a couple of minutes. A ‘HYBRID REALITY ENVIRONMENT’ FROM SCIENCE FICTION Composed of 72 LCD panels, a 20-speaker immersive surround sound system, and

A TV THAT GENERATES SOUNDWITH ITS SCREEN Instead of mounting on the wall or sitting an ordinary vertical television stand, the new Bravia TV comes equipped with a stand that leans directly on the floor. There’s no visible stand or border. The processor and other essential components are all housed in its back unit. But what’s really interesting about this TV is the way it generates sound. Examining the unit, you’ll discover there’s not a single speaker to be found. Instead, Sony’s equipped the screen itself with four actuators that turn the entire screen into a sound-emitting device — a new technology called “Acoustic Surface.”
