AUGUST 31 Discipline That Produces Strength “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength” (Isa. 30:15). The world can hardly understand the cool sweetness of spiritual solitude and leisureliness. The world judges its prog ress by its speed and its noise. The spirit ual pilgrim can only estimate his progress in an atmosphere o f unhurried calm. . . . The more we are weaned away from the world and its fashions, the less shall we seek the Lord for any benefit we hope to gain for ourselves, and the more earnestly shall we come to love Him for Himself. . . All this involves a spiritual discipline which, in the nature o f the case, can never be easy. The old impatience will continue to manifest itself; the old disappointment with our slow progress will continually be felt; the tendency to rush heedlessly into the presence of God will still remain. But as we discover the joyous enrichments that come to the soul through a calm and leisurely spiritual life, we shall prove in creasingly that in quiteness. and in confi dence we are to find our strength. —Life of Faith. Christian Endeavor Notes [Continued from page 274] method: First comes the experience o f clearing one’s mind o f the hindrances of the past—“ forgetting those things which are behind”—both failures and successes. Fail ures are likely to discourage us, and suc cesses are likely to lead to pride. Lastly, there is the “reaching forth unto those things which are before”—an eager joy in all our striving. What a picture the apos tle has drawn of progression and ultimate triumph! . ________ Leader’s Helps 1. We must remember that no matter what our aims may be, they are worthless unless Christ be with us. “Without me ye can do nothing,” He said.— A nderson . 3. Reaching Forth Always Trusting Loving Christ Supremely Loyal to Him Yielded Lives. —M. G. G. II. C h r is t ia n E ndeavor A ctivities This would be a good time to invite out standing Christian Endeavor leaders to visit your society to give you some sug gestions. With the approach o f fall, there is al ways a desire to rally our forces. Definite plans should be made. I f you live in a city where there are missions for foreigners, plan to give faithful assistance in these services. If no evangelistic work o f this kind is carried on in your locality, your Christian Endeavor society would do well to undertake this ministry. Revive your poster committee, and make much use of posters. Form a gospel team to hold “C. E.” and other gospel meetings in neglected places. Choose a missionary as your society’s special object for prayer and gifts. And re member that even if you cannot give much, such an interest will help yOur society to become missionary-minded.—M. G. G. . ,

God makes it absolutely certain that it is all right. He is to give God the benefit o f the doubt. Faith means the deliberate lay ing aside of all doubtful and controversial matters between you and God; it is not a matter o f what other people think may be doubtful, or what appears to you to be doubtful. You [and they] may be quite wrong. Your doubts may be due to hyper sensitiveness or the result of morbid in trospection. Never mind about that. If the doubts are there, wait until God re moves them. That is faith. J. R u sse ll H o w d en . AUGUST 29 Knowing Christ “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28). To know what Jesus Christ really is, we must go to Him when we need Him most. W e may go to Him in our speculative moods, and He may be to us silent. We may go to Him merely for the sake o f mak ing of His principles a momentary con venience, and we may be driven to pro nounce them insufficient. But when we go to Him in sin and in penitence for our transgressions, and with an earnest loving heart beseech Him to show Himself unto us, we are never left in doubt o f His om nipotence and graciousness! — J o seph P a r k e r . You have tried every other means of relief; now, come with your burden to Jesus the Lord. You shall never really know Him until you cast your burden on the Lord, arid find that He will sustain you. And you shall never know deliverance until you know Christ.— -A ndrew W il l s . AUGUST 30 In Line with God’s Will “ What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter" (John 13:7). Oftentimes the believer must be content to submit, without understanding the mean ing of God’s dealings with him. It is enough for him to know that he is in the hands o f Him whose love is infinite, whose wis dom is perfect, and whose power is om nipotent. There are some problems in life that can never be solved until we know even as we are known. On the other hand, there are many mysteries in the divine deal ings which God graciously condescends to explain to us, not at the time, but soon after we have passed through them. It is not necessary to our obedience that we should know the “why” and the “wherefore” ; it is sufficient that we are persuaded we are in the line of God’s will. I cannot see with my small human sight Why God should lead this way and that for me; I only know He saith, “ Child, follow ME,” And I can trust.— Alliance Weekly.
