A&W Rockland under new ownership

Future université fran- co-ontarienne Invité à se prononcer la semaine dernière sur le projet de loi 177, Loi de 2017 pour un Ontario plus fort et plus juste (mesures budgétaires), Carol Jolin, président de l’Assemblée de la fran- cophonie de l’Ontario (AFO), a exposé, devant le Comité permanent des finances et des affaires économiques de l’Ontario, les six recomman- dations de la communauté franco-ontarienne. Trois d’entre elles concernent la future université franco-ontarienne et stipulent, entre autres, que les étudiants représentent un cinquième du nombre total de membres du futur sénat de l’université, que le projet de loi définisse les termes « université mentor partenaires », « université mentor principales » et « affiliation académique » et que le comité de mise en oeuvre de l’UOF comprenne des représentants de la jeunesse et de la communauté. Lanthier spent over a month learning all of the ropes and is still spending a lot of his time in different posi- tions at the restaurant, anywhere from the kitchen to learning managerial skills. “You need to understand every part of the busi- ness to succeed, and this is also how I see what changes I need to bring,” he explained. Lanthier does not have plans to make any major changes to the restaurant – the A&W was recently renovated as part of the change in ownership contract. He does, how- ever, plan on making the restaurant more bilingual – most posters and signs inside the A&W are solely in English. Beginning on December 1, the A&W will be opening at 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. “I came in this Christian Lanthier is the new owner of the A&W restaurant in Rockland as of early November, having taken over the franchise from Stéphane and Manon Ouellette. Lanthier has not worked in the restaurant business for over 30 years, having spent most of his career in finance – working for the Bank of Canada and later on, opening up his own financial advisory business. Lanthier’s parents owned several restaurants while he was younger and picked up his experience working for them. “It was way different then than what it is now,” he said. “We were pre- paring nothing in advance – people used to expect to wait some time for their food, nowwe are working on a completely differ- ent pace. It’s very different, but I am really enjoying it,” he said. Lanthier worked for the Bank of Canada for 26 years before opening up his own busi- ness as a financial advisor. Having grown up in Gatineau, Quebec, Lanthier did spend some time in Rockland, before moving to Toronto for a few years for his career and now settling in Ottawa. Lanthier sold his financial business in 2010 and has been retired since. “In between then and now, I did try a couple of businesses, but none that really worked out,” he added. “I have been looking for something to buy, and this A&W seemed like a good opportunity.”

morning at 6:15 a.m. and there was already a lot of traffic,” he admitted. “I will probably give out free coffee for the first week between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. to promote the new times.” Currently, Lanthier spends most of his time at the restaurant, still learning the ropes and observing how the restaurant is run – especially from the restaurant’s manager Crystal DiPietrantonio, who has been the manager at this location for eight months, but also has previous experience with the company. “I just want to make sure it is always a good experience for the clients,” he said. “I always say it is easy to get the clients in, the hard part is getting them to come back.” PIEDS SENSIBLES!
