Preko 50.000 ljudi u najkreativnijim, često bizarnim i teatarskim kostimi- ma maršira Šestom avenijom, praće- ni stotinama džinovskih lutaka, lime- nim orkestrima i di-džejevima. Ako želite pravu oktobarsku atmos- feru i savršene jesenje kadrove bez učešća u paradi, Njujorčani shvata- ju ukrašavanje svojih kvartova smrt- no ozbiljno.

Forget Hollywood movies in which kids go door to door in search of candy. New York’s Halloween is a serious, subversive and wild urban party intended for adults. The abso- lute highlight on 31st October is the Villa- ge Halloween Parade in Greenwich Villa- ge. Over 50,000 people, wearing the most creative, often bizarre and theatrical costu- mes, parade down Sixth Avenue, accom- panied by hundreds of giant puppets, bra- ss bands and DJs. Where to be and what to do: the best place to stand and watch is along Sixth Avenue (between Spring and 16 th streets), from as early as 6pm if you want to grab a spot before the police set up the barricades. If you want to participa- te, there’s only one rule: you must have a costume. After the parade, the party relo- cates to the Village’s hundreds of bars, whe- re bourbon-based cocktails are sipped, wi- th dry ice fogging the glasses. This event harks back to the New York of the 1970s – noisy, free and indescribably fun. If you’re seeking real October vibes and per- fect autumn shots without participating in the parade, New Yorkers are deadly serio- us when it comes to decorating their ne- ighbourhoods.

ing the classic Manhattan edifices to take you to three interesting locations… 1. Brooklyn Army Terminal: Forget glass skyscrapers. This colossal Brooklyn complex is home to one of the most impressive atriums in America. Its cascading, concrete balconies and slanted skylights, through which the autumn light shines, make it a genuine paradise for photographers and lovers of raw industrial aesthetics. 2. The Little Red Lighthouse: Located directly under the massive steel structure of George Washington Bridge, this historic lighthouse resembles somet- hing out of a fairytale, defying the ur- ban madness surrounding it. OHNY wee- kend provides a rare occasion for visitors to actually be allowed to enter the light- house and climb the original, narrow spi- ral staircase to the very top. 3. TWA Flight Center (JFK Airport): Eero Saarinen’s architectural masterpie- ce opened in 1962 and has today been transformed into the luxurious TWA Hotel. Although the lobby itself is ge- nerally open to visitors, OHNY often offers exclusive guided tours through the hidden parts of this retro-futuri- stic edifice, explaining in detail the de- sign and engineering of this symbol of the golden age of civil aviation.
